They were in a nearby hotel sleeping on the only bed available in the place. Both of them were tired from traveling. Even though the bed was comfortable, both of them laid there with their eyes closed as they tried to fall asleep. However, sleep eluded them as they struggled to find the same comfort.
Pin could hear Rania's heart pounding in her ears. It sounded so fast as she listened to its rapid beat.
"Are you okay Rania?" He asked.
Rania opened one eye "Just tired…" she answered as she shut her eyes again.
Pin sighed and rolled onto his back, staring up at the ceiling. He wondered how long they could wait for help…or even how they could afford the cost of the room. He thought about all the trouble they were in already as he let his mind drift to what was going to become of them now.
He noticed their way of dressing was different coming into this world, but it didn't matter he would adapt…or so he thought. He knew what he had to do, and he was determined to do it he just didn't know how yet.
The moonlight streamed through the window illuminating the area around him with an almost mystical glow. As he watched a beam play across the wooden floor he couldn't help the excitement building inside of him. He wanted to feel the warmth of its rays against his skin. He wanted to bask in the glory of being among the stars.
"You used to be a Magi Hunter if remember right," She mumbled.
"Eventually I just got tired of doing it and retired…" He responded.
"But you were so awesome! My town loved hearing about you before the accident that happened…" Rania explained.
"Here I thought you were a brat and instead you were a fan?" Pin questioned.
His face grew red embarrassed as he smiled at the memory.
"Yeah…I kinda am…" She admitted, "Anyway I've been meaning to ask, why did you choose to leave your guild?" She inquired.
"They refused to help the guild that was stuck inside the dungeon and were lower leveled than the others…we could hear their screams as they were devoured by the monsters instead while the higher leveled members waited outside while they were trapped inside," He stated.
"Till this mission is over you need to be the magi hunter again so you can retrieve your immortality and go back to your peaceful life," Rania responded.
"Maybe this is a sign…" He whispered.
Memories flooded back and he could see the dungeon in front of him again with those beasts waiting to devour him. The pain and sorrow from losing everything rushed through his entire body once more. He remembered seeing his friend's lifeless body laying motionless on the ground and the way blood poured out from underneath the rubble.
Rania suddenly looked at him with soft eyes as though she sensed his thoughts "This was not your fault" She insisted.
The last of the tears flowed as Pin shook his head "Yes it was…they could have helped. If it wasn't for me they wouldn't have gotten hurt" He said.
An explosion could be heard in the distance before the windows shattered and the fire alarms went off They quickly jumped off the bed and sprinted through the room. Their feet pounded against the hardwood floors of the hotel as they ran toward the door. Rania pushed open a door and they slipped down a flight of stairs. They emerged in a hallway full of doors as the fire alarm blared in the background.
Pin stared down to find blood-stained hallways below his feet. Blood and broken glass crunched beneath his boots as he looked for where Rania went to. The smoke blocked his view as he moved through the hallways searching for exits or a way to escape. A familiar scream echoed throughout the building, but it wasn't close by. Suddenly a shadowed figure appeared in a doorway to his side. Pin froze as he saw the creature in front of them.
No, a twisted human made of flesh and bones. Its skin was white as snow and it wore a black suit. Its head hung low and its limbs were bent in every direction. Its mouth hung open with a tongue sticking out as if it was gasping for air. Its body was covered in black feathers and its head was covered with a pair of wings that fluttered behind it.
"What the hell…" Pin muttered.
A broken birdcage nearby caught his attention. Pin walked toward it as he noticed the pooled blood from within it. The smell of fresh blood sent chills through his spine. The bird lay motionless on the concrete floor, its wings spread out. Pin knelt beside the cage and stared at its body. It seemed too dead too stiff.
'This poor person…' He thought.
The body was limping with claw marks across its chest and stomach. Blood spilled from multiple wounds which oozed fresh blood into the puddle below it. It lurched in pain as it attempted to take a step forward. Blood dripped from its feathers as Pin stared at it, he reached his hand out, ready to pull back when Rania spoke up.
"I found a broom!" Rania shouted.
"Enchanting Quake Rule!" Pin chanted.
A simple stomp of feet raised the floor from under it causing the bird man's head to snap upward, and it flew backward with a screeching cry. Its wing's snapped as it crashed into the wall opposite them it landed roughly on its left leg causing it to crumble and shatter.
"We got to get out of here quickly!" Rania shouted.
He mounted the broom as they flew out of one of the shattered windows nearby. As they flew over the city streets in search of somewhere safe, they couldn't help the shivers running through their bodies. Pin clutched the broom tightly, as he held on to Rania with one arm. Their bodies shivered as they felt the cold wind blowing past their faces.
People shouting from down below could be heard as they flew high into the sky their voices faded away as the street lights and buildings turned smaller below them. The wind grew louder until Pin heard the faint sound of thunder in the distance. They headed north looking for some sort of shelter. It seemed like a good idea to hide in an abandoned building until this storm passed. After flying over many blocks in silence.
Rania kept an eye below as they soared overhead. Her mind kept drifting to thoughts of what was going to happen to them now that they had no one to call family, or friends who might want to help them. She glanced at Pin, he remained quiet as well.
"There is more…they are chasing us…" Pin noted.
Loud moaning could be heard as a large mass of morphed flesh bellowed below as the noise continued while they followed along behind the mass she began thinking the same thing he had.
The monster below was chasing after them, and judging by the sounds it was gaining speed.
"We need to find someplace safe and hidden" she suggested.
"Where? We have to keep going north. I don't think we will make any headway. There aren't many people in this area and I'm pretty sure everyone else will try to hide once they see these things," Pin noted.
"That's true. But what about a church? Or maybe a shrine…we haven't seen anything else since this started!" Rania responded.
Keeping a float they knew something was nearby, something was following them. The only problem was they could never tell where this thing was coming from. They looked ahead, but nothing was there it was empty, they couldn't see it.
A black feather fell from the sky. Pin instinctively gripped onto the broom tighter. as it descended towards them. He looked down to see a large group of creatures standing near the ground still holding their hands up reaching for them as their wails got louder.
.He could hear their cries as they screamed in pain and confusion trying to reach out towards their saviors. Their cries filled the night sky. He could feel himself growing weaker as they continued to descend further. He clenched his teeth together as he looked downward.
"Is there any magick that can be used these once people?" Sania asked.
He paused unsure what to say he didn't even understand how they would know how powerful his abilities truly were even though he used a lot of magick during his time as the magistrant. He didn't know exactly how much it was or if he should give it away.
