After Naomi Verset's victory, the first years felt a burst of confidence that they had won, while the third years were angry. They were insulted by the first years' contempt and humiliation.
They were not wrong to be angry because the education and support they received was two years ahead of the first years. And yet the first years had begun to look down on the third years as if it were a very easy thing to do. They wanted to put them in their place.
