Bernard raised one eyebrow and looked at him with an expressionless face. "I don't know if you're brave or reckless," he grinned. "Let's give it a try. If you bring me the sword I want, I'll give you what you want."
Perez breathed a sigh of relief as Bernard's words eased the tense atmosphere. Cale smiled, satisfied with the result.
"I have a question for you," Bernard stroked his beard. "Why do you want the elite families to get their feet off the black market?"
"Because they disregard the lives of others," he replied, and Bernard, who hadn't expected him to answer, looked at him puzzled.
He had thought Cale would hide his motive, but he was wrong. When he said, "So they disregard other people's lives," he seemed unaffected.
