Chapter 11 - The Townspeople

As I take deliberate steps, drawing myself closer to him, his countenance transforms with each move I make. The emotions on his face shift like shadows, starting with a burning rage that melts into a perplexed confusion, and then finally settles into a deep-seated fear. His legs quiver and wobble under the weight of his emotions, causing him to collapse onto the ground, his backside hitting the cold surface. His right hand instinctively covers the grievous wound etched across his chest.

I raise an eyebrow, my voice dripping with a mixture of taunting and curiosity. "Seems like the bravado has vanished. What happened to all that cockiness?" I adjust my grip on the hilt of my katana, the blade gleaming dully in the muted light. With both hands on the hilt, I ready myself for a decisive strike, my stance reflecting my unwavering determination. "Weren't you the one who boasted about tearing me apart?"

As I steady the katana before me, my right foot subtly shifts forward, indicating my readiness to launch an attack at any moment. Yet, despite the tension in the air, his response takes an unexpected turn. His voice, though laced with fear, carries an air of indifference to the consequences. "Hahah, little girl, your strength is undeniable, but remember, this world is vast. Compared to those wielding true power, your prowess is but a mere whisper in the wind."

I cast a contemplative gaze his way, my eyes reflecting a well-considered understanding. While his words hold truth, they're hardly a revelation. I'm no stranger to the hierarchy of strength that governs this realm. With the inexplicable abilities some have gained from consuming peculiar fruits, it's hardly a surprise to encounter individuals of extraordinary might.

A faint, knowing smile tugs at the corners of my lips. For the first time, I peer at him not as a foe, but as a fellow human being with shared vulnerabilities. "You're not wrong. My strength might pale in comparison to many who roam this world. But that doesn't deter me from aspiring for more." Pausing briefly, I allow my words to linger in the air. "By the way, just to set the record straight, I'm not a girl."

Without giving him a chance to react to my bold declaration, I confidently bring my sword down in a swift motion. The blade moves with such speed that it creates another cut on his chest before he can even process what's happening. As blood starts to seep from the wound, it becomes clear that this final strike signals the end of our intense battle. His eyes slowly close as he succumbs to unconsciousness.

"He'll probably make it through, as long as someone stumbles upon him and provides medical attention," I remark, my eyes scanning the dimly lit alleyway that surrounds us. With a contemplative expression, I continue, "Although, I have my doubts if anyone will actually come across him in time."

I take a moment to let my words sink in before I calmly sheath my katana, securing it behind me on my waist. A wistful smile tugs at the corner of my lips as I add, "Well, it seems my work here is done."

As I stand there, the sense of accomplishment washes over me. I had meticulously tested every facet I wanted to explore, and the satisfaction is undeniable. I now possess a clear understanding of my limits, the velocity I can achieve, and the raw power I can unleash. Yet, what truly stands out is the revelation of the extent of my swordsmanship skills.

With a renewed sense of purpose, I declare, "It's time to regroup with the others. I hope Luffy managed to free himself from that cage by the time I get there."

.....

After finally managing to reach the location where I believed they currently were, the first thing that struck me was the astonishing level of destruction that unfolded in every direction. The landscape appeared as if an entire army had rampaged through, leaving behind a trail of chaos and devastation that was hard to ignore. I couldn't help but verbalize my astonishment, exclaiming, "What in the world..."

As my gaze swept across the scene, it fell upon Luffy, who was engaged in a rather peculiar task of trying to rouse the slumbering Zoro, who lay face-down on the ground. "Hey, Zoro! wake up! Let's get going!" Luffy's voice carried a sense of urgency as he lightly tapped Zoro's body in an attempt to rouse him. Zoro, clearly fatigued and nursing injuries, began to stir, his eyes slowly lifting to take in both Luffy and me, who was approaching from behind Luffy.

Luffy, sensing Zoro's gaze fixed on something behind him, turned around and caught sight of me. His expression broke into a wide, pleased smile, and it was as though he had spotted an old friend. Zoro, now gradually rising to his feet, directed his attention toward me, curiosity evident in his eyes. With a hint of relief in his voice, he inquired, "Did you guys manage to handle things?"

Luffy, his attention alternating between me and Zoro, responded with a sense of pride, "Yeah, and I got the map and the treasure." This statement piqued my interest – what map and what treasure were they talking about? The thought lingered in my mind, but for the moment, I chose to address Zoro's question. "Yea, yea, I'm satisfied," I affirmed, though my curiosity about the map and treasure still lingered beneath the surface.

Zoro's expression suddenly changes, his hand instinctively flying to his forehead as he lets out a strained grunt, "UNGH! This is bad... I don't think I can take another step," his words laced with a clear sense of agony. As those syllables escape his lips, the vibrant-haired girl we encountered earlier starts to make her way towards us, a determined expression etched onto her features. "Naturally! It's a bit hard to believe either of you are just ordinary humans," she interjects with a confident tone, a spark of curiosity dancing in her eyes.

I spare a quick sidelong glance in her direction, a wry grin forming as I chime in, "Can we really consider them humans? I mean, Luffy's practically a monkey and Zoro... well, I'm not even sure what category he falls into," my voice dripping with playful sarcasm when I mention Luffy's simian tendencies.

The girl's reaction is as if she's stumbled upon an entirely new species, her body slightly recoiling in surprise. Luffy, always quick to jump into the fray, jumps in, his voice raised in protest, "Hold on! Just because my name has 'Monkey' in it doesn't mean I'm a monkey, you know!" his words a mixture of exasperation and protest.

A chuckle escapes my lips at his vehement response, a mischievous glint in my eyes. "Oh, calm down, Luffy," I retort, feigning innocence. "I was just making an observation. After all, who would've ever thought that our fearless captain could have any resemblance to our tree-swinging friends?" I give him a playful wink, thoroughly enjoying his flustered reaction.

After a fleeting pause, the girl lets out a genuine peal of laughter, her amusement evident as she directs her attention to Luffy, her words coming out in a rapid-fire succession, "Oh, you're certainly something less than human, that's for sure," her teasing assertion ringing in the air like a playful melody.

Suddenly Luffy's attention is drawn abruptly to his right, where he spots a man lying on his back, appearing to be unconscious. With a concerned expression, he remarks, "Oh yeah, I better wake the mayor." However, before he can even begin to undertake that task, a multitude of individuals suddenly emerge from nowhere and start moving towards our group.

However, just as he's about to set off on this task, a sudden influx of individuals materializes seemingly out of thin air. The foremost figure, the leader of this group, steps forward and addresses us, a mix of curiosity and irritation dancing in his eyes. "Hold on a second there! Are you folks part of the pirate crew that's causing all this ruckus in our town?"

Eying our group with skepticism, the citizens appear to be on edge, their expressions a canvas of distrust. The orange-haired girl amongst us lets out an audible sigh of relief before she speaks up, her voice tinged with exhaustion. "Oh, thank goodness! You're the townspeople, right? We were starting to worry you might be more pirates."

She brings her right hand up to her forehead in a gesture of weariness, her face clearly reflecting the toll of recent events. "We're more than willing to explain what's been going on, but I have to warn you, it's quite a tale."

In a surprising turn of events, the leader directs his attention towards the mayor, who remains unconscious on the ground. A jolt of astonishment crosses his features, prompting him to exclaim, "Hold on a minute! Isn't that the mayor over there?" In a chain reaction, the rest of his companions follow suit, their voices blending into a chorus of concern. "Mayor, what on earth happened here?" one of them shouts. "Someone, get a doctor!" cries another. "Could it be those wretched pirates behind all this?" adds a third voice to the mix, and finally, the last member of the group chimes in, "We need answers, and we need them now!"

It's quite remarkable, isn't it? The depth of care these townspeople hold for their mayor is truly heartwarming. The way they reacted, showing such concern when their beloved mayor lay on the ground, speaks volumes about the strong bonds within this community. Given the extent of their attachment, it's possible that our attempts to explain the situation might fall on deaf ears. It might be wiser for us to consider making a swift exit from here.

However, in a rather unexpected turn of events, Luffy, true to his Monkey lineage, decides to speak up boldly. "Actually, it wasn't like that. I'm the one who knocked the old man out," he states matter-of-factly, almost as if he sees no fault in his actions. It's moments like these when Luffy's straightforward nature shines through perhaps a bit too brightly.

Amused by the situation, I can't help but voice my thoughts aloud. "What an absolute idiot," I mutter under my breath, taking note of how the townspeople's expressions shift into a mixture of anger and frustration upon hearing Luffy's confession. Their faces contort, veins bulging, weapons at the ready – it's a sight to behold.

Suddenly, the orange-haired girl in our group can no longer contain her exasperation. Her voice rings out, a mix of anger and desperation, directed squarely at Luffy. "Luffy, seriously?! You didn't have to blurt that out!" she practically screams, her frustration evident in every syllable. Yet, Luffy remains unphased, responding in his signature simple and direct manner. "Well, you saw it happen, didn't you?" he retorts, as if that's all the justification he needs.

The girl's rage intensifies, her words dripping with irritation as she fires back at Luffy. "Sure, I saw it, but that doesn't mean I was planning on telling the entire town about it!" she retorts, her frustration palpable. The tension in the air is thick, and it's clear that our already complicated situation has taken an even more precarious turn.

In a tumultuous scene, emotions run high as a furious voice pierces the air, "You did this to the mayor!" The speaker, his face contorted with anger, thrusts a menacing spear towards Luffy. But the sentiment is not held by just one; another voice rises in a crescendo of frustration, "It's intolerable!" The second figure's exasperation mirrors the first, making their shared sentiments evident.

A third voice, carrying a mix of incredulity and accusation, joins the chorus, "Who are you? Pirates?!" The words are spat out with a mix of disbelief and disdain. The third individual, much like the first two, doesn't hold back, punctuating their words by also brandishing a spear in Luffy's direction.

Amidst this chorus of outrage, one would think that the mood couldn't darken further. Yet, as if defying that notion, Luffy's retort slices through the tension, his voice rising in an almost carefree declaration, "We're pirates!!" His expression, an embodiment of innocence, clashes intriguingly with the gravity of the situation.

However, the response from the townspeople is anything but subdued. Fuelled by a righteous indignation, they surge towards the source of their anger, armed and determined, a lone cry piercing through, "Pirates!! Get them!" The town's collective anger becomes palpable, as if the air itself carries their animosity.

Amidst this charged environment, Zoro's hearty laughter reverberates, a response to Luffy's seemingly reckless proclamation. Meanwhile, an orange-haired girl adds her voice to the chaos, her shout of frustration cutting through, "You idiot!" Luffy remains unswayed, almost as if he's oblivious to the perilous situation, "We are pirates!"

As an observer to this unfolding drama, I find myself unable to contain my mirth, joining in the laughter alongside Zoro. The sheer audacity and absurdity of the situation seem to transcend the immediate danger, casting a surreal hue over the scene.
