Mira walked out of the mansion's main door with her hands in the air, her pace slow, "Mira Smith, granddaughter of the people who called!" She shouted over the field.
The policemen shared a look before Commissioner Hartway used the megaphone, "Can you get to us?"
"Yeah. The intruders are dead. Where are my grandparents?" Mira shouted again this time loud enough to hurt her throat.
Dead? Hartway paused. What did she mean dead? Alright, "Wait right there, we are coming." He then put the megaphone down on the hood of his cruiser and turned to his officers, "Check it out. Be careful though. The grandparents are still inside, assume the assialtes are alive and armed."
The officer nodded but before he could move forward, something came shooting through the sky. A figure in red and blue that finally slowed down above them before floating down to their level.
Seeing him Hartway spoke up, "Superman."
The tall, almost comically buff Kryptonian nodded, "Officer, what's the situation?"
"Hostages, we suspect..." He stopped as he noticed two more figures walk out of the side of the estate, elderly. The grandparents.
Oh.
He looked at the man floating next to him, "Can you see if anyone is alive inside?"
"No," Instantly a frown deep setting on his lips, "Three dead-bodied. Probably the intruders."
The girl had already started walking over before she spotted the old couple and quickly broke into a run almost falling into a hug with them.
Elderly though they were, they still pulled her in tight. Probably glad to see her well.
Hartway cycled a breath of relief, "They killed all the intruders didn't they?"
"I think so," Superman agreed.
Then there was no use for the man of steel, so Heartway shooed him away, "We will handle it."
Superman only gave a brief nod before he shot into the sky like a bullet and vanished soon after.
Well, time for the next phase, the aftermath, the cleanup, evidence collecting and...ugh, reports—Speaking of reports, reporters. Hartway could already imagine what tomorrow's headline was going to be: Intruders shot and killed by an elderly couple and their grandkid.
However, by the time the news reporters arrived, Hartway realised that they might just have to strike the elderly couple part off. He had just gotten his hands on the security footage.
Not that Mira cared, she was sitting with a metallic blanket wrapped around her, right next to her entire family.
None truly spoke to her. They were talking, yes but mostly just dancing around the beat, not with it.
"I hope insurance covers it," Her father, Klavin, spoke, and her grandfather snorted, "It won't cover Lucy or Coco."
Seeing an opportunity Mira interjected, "Sorry," She looked down with the makings of a frown, acting good enough to be taken for guilt, "If I had come sooner..."
She couldn't even finish before her mother, Sabrina, wrapped her arms around her, "None of that."
Seeing the scene, her father realised that this way they were never going to open the lid and he had to be the one to do it so finally decided to breach the subject, "So you killed them all?"
He was louder than he intended, enough to draw a few ears from the surroundings, still, Mira nodded, "Yeah."
His question earned him a glare from Sabrina, but he couldn't quite bring himself to stop, "You fine? Can you tell me what happened?"
She looked up at him, her lips thin, "I realized what was going on when I found the bodies of Lucy and Coco. After that, I think I was too focused to care. The only thing I thought of was how to get them..." Her eyes turned to her Grandparents briefly before shifting back, "You know, safe. And after killing the first guy, adrenaline carried me through the rest."
He put a hand on her shoulder, "I shouldn't say this, killing others is..." He sighed, "I am proud of you for protecting our family."
She sighed, well that was a relief, trying to cultivate the sentiment further she turned to her mother, "Sorry. I know you don't like me putting myself in danger. But you know—" She felt Sabrina's hands just tighten around her, "No mother does. Just promise me: never again."
Not if the system had its way. It wanted her to kill and she was more than happy to oblige. But that was not something she was ever going to tell anyone, so, she lied, "It's a promise."
"As touching as this is, I have a few questions for you," A voice broke into their conversation, Mira turned her head, a reporter with a press badge hanging off her neck was standing in front of them, her arms crossed and a haughty smile on her lips.
Sabrina didn't even have to think before she barked, "Fuck off Lois," the hostility was brazen.
Completely unbothered by Sabrina she just shrugged, "Nice to see you too."
Superman's love interest, with all the same white skin and black hair one would expect of her was standing in front of her, and if she was here—Mira scanned her surroundings and sure enough, Clark Kent was not too far away, interviewing some of the first responders.
Not wanting to be caught looking by the man's superhuman senses Mira turned her eyes back, "So, who is she, Mom?"
"A snitch," Sabrina answered. "Reporter," Lois disagreed.
"Same difference, and regardless fuck off," Sabrina shot back, as she opted to completely ignore her existence.
"Sheesh, it's just a few questions Sabrina, nothing bad, trust me," Lois smiled at them, a smile that only served to piss off Sabrina even more.
Klavin finally had enough of it, he called at Lois, it was evident enough that he didn't want her here, but still she ignored it, instead focusing on Mira, "Come on kid, you won't want that cold killing spree to end up in tomorrow's news would you?"
Mira's just widened as she stared at Lois, was she threatening her? "What? Scared? Just a few questions come on and it won't..."
And it made her laugh. A laugh followed by her cursing, "The fuck that's gonna do?"
A smack landed on her head, her mother glared at her. Right, she was supposed to be the good girl and good girls didn't curse. So, she meeked out an apology, "Sorry."
Sabrina just shook her head, "Lois, get lost. Mira doesn't want—"
"She looks fine to me," Lois cut her off and Sabrina could tell, the bitch was serious when she said Mira looked just fine. Heck even to her—No! What was she thinking!?
Mira saw where this was going so she took the initiative to drive the conversation in the direction she wanted, "They had my grandparents at gunpoint. If you think I will feel bad—Sorry, it does not work like that."
"It does though," Lois shook her head, "Kid, people are people. Not saying you did wrong. Just..." She paused, "Just that there is always something there when you ice someone."
What she was saying made sense, not that it mattered, "Not here for an interview, are you?"
Lois just smiled, "I'm a reporter not a bitch." Then looking at her mother she said, "Take her to a doctor Sabrina. She needs some therapy. Might not look like it but either she is fucked in the head or she is rationalizing."
Sabrina matched her eyes, "Get lost."
Lois raised her hands in mock surrender, "Geez, fine," before turning on her heels and walking away.
Seeing her walk away Mira complimented her, "She seems like a nice person," which earned her weird looks, though truthfully it was more for Superman to hear than anyone else.
After all, Clark Kent would like someone who complimented his girlfriend—who has on multiple occasions been cheating on him with his Superman persona—wouldn't he?
Eh, maybe.
Still, she was gone and someone else had walked up to talk to them. That someone was Officer Maywind, who spoke after a nod of greeting, "We will need you guys to come with us."
Mira could almost feel her mother hiss but it was a futile gesture. No two ways about it: They were going in for questioning.
At least, the police would be sympathetic to her...probably, they had been over the CCTV recordings after all.
Though Mira didn't know if she was willing to just go along.
A sentiment shared by her father, "A second, please."
Taking a step back the policeman nodded, "Two minutes."
He didn't need those two minutes as he just shared a brief look with Mira's grandparents before looking at Sabrina, "We will give the interview to the press."
Mira did not have the faintest clue as to what they were talking about but the way Sabrina was frowning she didn't like it either but she relented, "Fine."
Before she could even ask what they were thinking the policeman spoke up from the distance, "We gotta move."
She gave one last look at her father who just gestured for her to go.
Alright, she decided, she would just have to trust them on this one, whatever their plan was.
Walking over to the officer she was soon escorted into the back of a police car along with her grandparents.
Mira cast one last look outside at her parents as they approached one of the many reporters on the scene before turning back and getting comfortable in her seat.
The cops got in after that, they all had automatics with them, MP5s, ARs, and they looked like they had come prepared for a gunfight. Maywind, one of the two in the car even asked, "You okay kid?"
"Think so," She replied as the wheels started to spin, "Identified who they were?"
Francisca had been listening and as she heard her granddaughter's words she knew she had the answer, after all, how couldn't she? How could she not know of that TRAITOR, "Kevin, I am sure of it," her words got Mira's attention immediately and so she smouldered on, "That traitor, he used to eat with us on our table, I baked his cookies, gave him extra money to buy gifts on Christmas for his family...Look now! That traitor!—" She stopped. Realising that her husband's hands already tucked her in close. Right, what example she was setting for her granddaughter?
Maywind didn't speak a word, they had already been read their rights and so whatever they spoke was on them, but the little girl had asked him a question, "We have identified them as Kevil Lasiter, Chase Gist and Jammy Rock."
So the caretaker was indeed there? Well, Mira had guessed as much, still, she had things to confirm, "Kevin killed Lucy and Coco after drugging them?"
Good guess, the other officer thought. But all he said was out was, "And why would that be?"
They didn't struggle, slick cuts at their necks. Whoever killed them was familiar enough with them. They were probably drugged too because if one of them saw the other bleeding, they would raise one hell of a racket. But they didn't.
Not that Mira was going to point any of that out and try to be a smartass. She knew boundaries and when the cop refused to answer, she realised she was standing at the edge of one, "Just guessing."
The cop shrugged ending the exchange. The next words only to be spoken when the wheels finally drifted to a stop in front of the Metropolis police headquarters as they followed the cops out of the car, "Well, don't be too nervous."
"Too? So, I should be nervous?"
The officer laughed, "You are going into an interrogation room, of course you should be."
Mira felt a chill claw up her spine, interrogation. First time into a police station and it's straight to the interrogation room. She didn't know how she felt about that, maybe they were going to charge her for—no that didn't make sense. It was self-defence.
The policemen pulled the door open, waiting for her to walk out on her own, not showing any hostility.
Mira didn't know how to feel about that. Still, as the officers led, she followed silently. Through the front entrance, she was quickly led up the stairs into the third room on the second floor, which was labelled I-3—A stark, white, claustrophobic void.
Following behind the cops, she took her seat at the far end, facing the doorway, but the cops didn't, one of them said, "If you need anything you can knock on the door. A couple of investigators will be over in about fifteen minutes."
Mira nodded seeing that the cops left her. This was going to be a pain, wasn't it?
