Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Failure Is Not An Option (1)

Floating.

He is floating. When he opened his eyes, he saw darkness.

He can't breathe, but he doesn't feel suffocated.

He felt wet. His entire body is wet like he is in the water.

This situation gave him a sense of deja vu. Is it really deja vu? Or was this situation something he had come across before?

Shouldn't someone have appeared in front of him? A kid. Yes, a kid. But where is he?

The kid would come and say something in a language he didn't understand. But he would understand the language later. How? He didn't remember.

Eh, it is weird. He saw someone else.

That is not the kid he is waiting for. Who is that person?

The person he never saw before is in the same situation as him right now. Weirdly, he didn't remember this ever happening. Why did he see the person now? How did he see that person when it was dark here?

This doesn't make any sense. Is he hallucinating again? Ah, yes. The kid was also one of his hallucinations.

He was here to die. How did he forget such an important thing? He closed his eyes and smiled.

Yes, he wanted to die. That has always been his goal. Since his mom died. Since his father left him. Since he caused his baby sister to die.

His only baby sister died because of him.

"Brother!"

Weird. He remembered that his baby sister had black hair, just like him. Who is this blond girl in his memory?

"Wake up and play with me!"

Who is this? He never played with any children, so why did this kid want to play with him? Moreover, why did this kid call him brother? He just had a baby sister, and she's already gone. Because of him.

"You said you'd catch me when I fell! You also said you'd save me when I'm in trouble!"

He did? He never said something like that. Did he? Really? He never promised anyone anything. He had done it before with his baby sister, but he failed. He had killed his baby sister.

"Brother! When will you come to save me?"

Why is she angry now? He didn't understand. Why was he haunted when he was dying right now?

His memory turned back to the time with his baby sister. Yes, this is his baby sister. His baby sister gives light to his life. His baby sister is always there for him. His only baby sister.

"Did you forget about me?"

Forget? He never met this blond girl.

"Brother, you said you'd be there for me."

Nasharis began to cry. Huh? He didn't do anything.

Wait, Nasharis? Who is Nasharis? Why does her name sound familiar?

"Nasharis is your sister."

He opened his eyes to see the boy for whom he was waiting. The boy looked sad.

"Nasharis is always your sister. Don't fail this time, please."

Yes, Nasharis. This boy's little sister. He had taken on the role of Nasharis' brother when he was in this boy's body. He now remembered what had happened. He was stabbed, and his neck has been slit open. Nasharis was kidnapped.

Don't fail? He had failed once. How can he succeed? He is weak, pathetic, and useless.

Nasharis was kidnapped because of him. She would die because of him. This has always been like this. He is a failure. He was not fit to be a big brother.

"You can save her. There is still time. Get up! Open your eyes! You can change their destiny! Save them! Protect them!"

"Why me?"

He managed to let out a voice. This question never left his mind. Why him? He never asked for this. He never wished for this. So why him?

"Michael Lee, no, Michaelis Kristafall. You will succeed this time. You are capable because I know you will."

His eyes widened when the boy morphed into his baby sister. He wanted to cry, but he couldn't.

"I don't blame you, brother. Thank you for everything, and I'm sorry that I am becoming your burden."

"No, you are not, Marya."

He finally cried, but he couldn't feel the wetness. His baby sister didn't blame him. but he had failed her. How can she say something like that?

"I love you, brother. In the past, now, and forever."

His baby sister is gone with the light. No, bring him along. He wanted to meet with his mother and baby sister again. He wanted to reunite with them again. He didn't want to go back and become a failure again!

"You won't."

The boy came again.

"You will succeed this time. I believe in you."

"Don't."

"Nasharis is still alive. She is waiting for you, Michaelis."

What's the point? He had been stabbed multiple times. He would die anyway. He wasn't strong enough.

"Becoming pathetic again? Trying to repeat your failure? I thought you were trying to become better and promised to protect everyone!"

"You didn't know anything!"

"Pathetic. You are pathetic, Michael. You can't even fulfil your promise to be with her when she needs you."

"Shut up!"

"You'll die a meaningless death. You'll bring pain to everyone. You need to remember. You are not Michael anymore; you are Michaelis!"

His death will be remembered. His death this time will make everyone sad and suffer. Not like before. He would die, leaving everyone grieving for him.

He didn't like that. He didn't want anyone to cry because of him.

"Nasharis is waiting for you."

"Why did you believe in me?"

The boy smiled a smile with which he was familiar now because he always saw it in the mirror.

"Because you are someone who will get whatever he wants. No matter what methods you need to use."

He closed his eyes and let out a soft laugh. Yes, he is. He is that kind of person. He would do anything he wanted until he succeeded.

His death needs to wait in line for now because he has something more important to do.

"Thank you for this second change."

"Death has just not been chosen for you yet."

The boy shone brightly, blinding his eyes instantly. He suddenly felt suffocated, like he was drowning at that time.

×××××

He opened his eyes widely. He took a deep breath, searching for the air he somehow lacked like he was drowning just now. However, that is impossible.

His body is stiff and hurts slightly. His mouth is sore and dry. His head is also pounding. He frowned, but the pain increased.

He then groaned when he tried to move his body.

How long did he lose consciousness?

"Michaelis!"

"Micha!"

His vision was suddenly filled with two familiar faces. But the person he was looking for was not there.

"Mom, sister."

The two women started to cry. He was hugged by the two women.

"I'm glad. Thank God. My baby."

He made them cry. It is true. His death would make these people cry. Thinking about that makes his heart throb in pain.

"Where's Nasharis?"

This is the question he wanted to know. He needed to know if she was safe. He needed to know if she was still out there with her kidnapper. He needed to know to save her. He hopes—he really hopes she is saved now—that they have managed to find her.

But the sudden stiffness of Zera's body called it away. Zera let go of him.

"Michaelis."

"Mom, where is Nasharis? She is safe, right? She is, right? Please tell me."

He pleaded. In the back of his mind, he somehow remembered someone telling him that Nasharis was still alive, but was she safe? Is she fine? Was she not injured?

"Sister? Please tell me."

Even Helenis avoided eye contact. No, that must not be true. Nasharis must be safe.

"For how long have I lost consciousness?"

He asked but was answered with silence. He gritted his teeth.

"Tell me!"

"A week. You have been unconscious for a week, Your Highness."

His gaze fell on Celix, who had just come into the room.

A week. That's too long. By the look of them, Nasharis must not be here right now. That means; Nasharis was already kidnapped for a week!

He tried to get up from his bed, but fatigue struck his entire body.

"Calm down, Your Highness. You might hurt yourself again."

Celix frowned and pushed him back down on the bed, but he slapped Celix's hands away.

"Nasharis is still out there! I can't lie down here like nothing happened!"

"His Majesty is sending the troupe to look for her. We have some clues as to where she is right now."

"Where? Tell me now!"

"I can't, Your Highness."

"Then don't get in my way, or I'll kill you myself."

He activated his aura as a warning. He pushed Celix away and stepped down from the bed.

"Micha, please. You must not move too much."

He looked at Zera with sad eyes. Then he looked at Helenis. He knew they were worried about him. He knew he must have almost died because of blood loss. He knew, but he couldn't sit still with Nasharis still not being saved.

"I'm sorry. I can't let Nasharis out there alone."

Not again. He won't fail again.
