Chapter 19 - 19_Flight

When they came, we already anticipated it. With the power suppressor out of my neck, I could sense them with my telepathy; I heard when Kate issued the order and when the men began their match to the room. The door was broken open and two huge men walked in, they were clad in black with heavy boots.

We made sure Amara was well hidden before they came, we didn't want them to know she was on our side in order for the plan to work.

I had put the neck collar back on my neck and hidden the key in my pants pocket. I was still dressed in Amara's clothes.

Ma and Cathy definitely deserve Oscar awards. Best actors of the year goes to...

Ma was screaming and pulling at my arm while Cathy was consoling her with rivers tears streaming down her face.

Before I was pushed into the elevator, I looked back and my eyes met with Cathy's who gave me a very discreet wink.

I was taken to a different location from the last time.

We stood outside a large door and one of the men knocked on the door. I heard a woman's voice from inside ushering us in.

I was pushed into the room and the door was shut behind me.

The room was a large office with a large desk in front of me. A woman with white blond hair had her head bent over a file in front of her with her hands folded in front of her.

I stood silently waiting for her to finally acknowledge my presence.

I waited shifting my weight from one foot to another. When she felt it was time, she finally raised her head to look at me.

Aunty Katherine looked the same; she still looked sophisticated but her face looked meaner.

She smiled at me the way she always did, as if everything was alright in the world.

"Why are you still standing, take a seat" She asked gesturing with her hands.

I looked at her like she had gone mad, which obviously looked like the case.

Her bringing me here only made the job easier. I felt my back pocket for the micro camera.

I smiled sweetly and sat down on the chair opposite hers.

"Hello Aunty, how have you been?"

She paused for a second looking shocked then she replied slowly

"I've been better, as you can see"

"You look good to me" I replied stroking her ego a little.

She looked at me with narrowed eyes

"Why are you being nice to me?"

"You don't take compliments?" I asked narrowing my eyes too.

Then it turned into a staring contest, her eyes narrowed more into slits as she stare at me suspiciously.

"You know your dear mother tried to cheat me?"

"Really? Is that why you want me dead?"

She ignored me and looked down at the papers scattered on her table.

I used that fleeting second to discreetly pull out the micro camera in my pocket.

I held it tightly in my palm; my eyes scanned the room looking for the right place to stick it.

Katherine looked up at me; she held two pieces of papers in her hand, she stretched them to me and gestured for me to go through them.

I collected both of them with one hand and placed them on the table, I glanced at the paper not knowing exactly what I'm supposed to see.

"What exactly am I looking for?" I asked looking up from the white sheet.

"That contains the number of losses I've made. The first paper is profit before the explosion and the second is after the explosion" Her eyes hardened.

"So why exactly are you showing me this?"

"To show you how your mother ruined my life"

"How exactly did she ruin your life? From what I can remember, she was never in charge of your finances"

"She didn't tell you during your little reunion?" She asked looking closely at me a small smile on her lips.

"Tell me what?"

"She didn't tell you she was the one who made the gas that ruined the world?"

I felt a sharp pain in my chest at the words that came out of this woman's mouth.

I stared at her wide eyed unable to contain my shock.

"I…I…I don't believe you"

"Your Mother is not the angel you take her to be"

"She spent her whole life trying to save the world, saving lives and helping humanity. There is no way she would ruin what she worked so hard for"

My voice sounded so hoarse.

There is no way Ma would do something like that, she never made mistakes and even if she did she never got everyone involved in it.

Tears started steaming down my face at the thought of everything.

The one person I thought would cure me is the very person that would be responsible for my death.

"What if this doesn't work?" my breaths were coming out in shallows.

Cathy was beside me as we were working on the fake gas for tomorrow. It was so late in the night and everybody was probably asleep.

"It's going to work just trust me. No one is going to die" Cathy reply. Her voice was heavily laced with fatigue.

"Cathy you know you don't have to help me with this?"

"I know but I want to"

Amara was already dozing off on her high stool; if she falls asleep she might fall off.

"Amara, go to Cathy's room and get some sleep you don't have to stay up"

I walked up to her rubbing her back slowly.

"I don't want to be alone now. Please can I just stay here?"

I could see fear in the depths of her eyes.

Cathy and I exchanged looks. Then she nodded slowly.

We worked in silence for a while then we heard the door behind us rattle as someone tried to pull it open.

We looked at each other as we stood frozen.

Cathy had suggested we lock the door and turn off the lights so that no one would suspect anything.

The rattling at the door continued then suddenly stopped and everywhere became quiet.

I placed my forefinger across my lips gesturing for everyone to be quiet; the person was still standing at the door.

We stood in silence, everyone holding their breath until we heard the sound of receeding footsteps echoing down the hall.

"That was close" Cathy whispered releasing her breath.

We waited for thirty seconds to make sure no one was coming again, and then we went back to work.

Shortly after that, the fake gas was finally ready; we just had to switch it with the deadly one.

The transparent box was just right there at the top of one of the shelves, it was locked and thankfully I had the key.

We brought the box down after much effort; we placed it on one of the table tops.

I was about to open the box when the rattling at the door began again followed by the sound of someone inserting a key into the lock.

We looked at each other with panic.

Our hands started working frantically.
