Chapter 66 - CH 67 - Not an Evil Spirit?

At this moment, in the lobby, not only were Gu Qingfeng and Meng Peng present, but Gu Yang and several other guards at the Blood Refining Realm had also arrived.

"Tell me the details!" Gu Qingfeng commanded, glancing at the other mummified corpses before turning his gaze to the group.

As soon as he finished speaking, one of the Blood Refining Realm guards stepped forward. "Master, people have been disappearing for the past five days. We've been searching tirelessly but found nothing—until today, when we discovered these missing people in a dry well. Their energy and blood were completely drained, and their internal organs were hollowed out. We suspect this could be related to evil spirits!"

Evil spirits! It was no longer a secret to the Gu family guards. When Gu Qingfeng led the Gu family's strongmen to the Qingyang Sect, the presence of the Qingyang Patriarch had already exposed them to the existence of sorcerers and evil spirits.

Now, with such strange events occurring, it was hard not to associate them with something sinister.

"It does have an aura similar to evil spirits," Gu Qingfeng said thoughtfully, "but I can't confirm it for sure."

His words sent a shiver down the spines of everyone present. Though they had already suspected as much, hearing it directly from Gu Qingfeng still left them stunned.

Gu Qingfeng then looked at the group and spoke calmly. "Where is the dry well where the bodies were found? Take me there."

"Yes, Master," they responded.

A short while later, they arrived at the dry well in the backyard of Gujiazhuang. The moment they stepped into the yard, Gu Qingfeng felt a strong, chilly aura. When they reached the well, the cold sensation intensified even more.

Without hesitation, Gu Qingfeng leapt into the well. It had long dried up, leaving no visible traces around the walls, but the concentrated cold aura confirmed to him that this was no ordinary situation.

After a brief inspection, Gu Qingfeng emerged from the well.

"Did Father discover anything?" Gu Yang asked.

Gu Qingfeng shook his head slightly. "I have some clues, but I'm not certain yet. I'll stay here for the next two days. Carry on with your other tasks as usual."

His gaze sharpened. "I want to see who dares cause trouble right under my nose."

His words were cold and resolute. Whether it was an evil spirit or something else, whoever stood in his way would meet their end.

Hearing this, the others felt a wave of relief. With Gu Qingfeng personally handling the matter, they were confident there would be no major problems.

As night fell, darkness gradually swallowed Gujiazhuang.

Gu Qingfeng sat cross-legged on the roof, his arms folded and eyes closed as if resting. The Zhuxie Sword lay beside him, ready to strike at a moment's notice.

Suddenly, Gu Qingfeng opened his eyes. The sky was now pitch-black, and the entire Gujia Village seemed to have plunged into an eerie silence. The surrounding darkness pressed in, devouring everything bit by bit like a creeping flood. The cold, strange atmosphere had reached its peak.

"It's here!" Gu Qingfeng's eyes gleamed with an icy sharpness.

Though he couldn't see the evil spirit, his keen warrior senses told him something in the darkness was watching him.

The entire Gujia Village was unnaturally quiet. Normally, with hundreds of craftsmen present, the place should have been bustling.

At that moment, the Zhuxie Sword trembled slightly in response.

Gu Qingfeng grasped the hilt of his sword. As soon as he did, the long blade sprang free, slicing through the darkness with a flash of brilliant light. The sword's energy surged with bloodlust and killing intent, tearing through the air.

"Ah—" A shrill, ear-piercing wail followed the strike.

It was then that Gu Qingfeng realized the true nature of the scene before him. He wasn't on the roof. At some point, he had walked right to the edge of the dry well, just one step away from falling in.

On the ground, a pile of black ashes remained, faintly exuding cold energy. Yet the chill that had pervaded the yard was now completely gone.

"This is no evil spirit," Gu Qingfeng muttered. "But it was able to affect my mind without me noticing. Whatever this is, it's no simple matter."

He looked down at the ashes and the dissipating cold. Whatever had haunted Gujia Village had been vanquished, but its true nature was still a mystery. It had been able to manipulate the mind of a warrior, even one in the Internal Refining Realm, though it wasn't particularly powerful. Gu Qingfeng could dispatch it with a single sword strike.

He suspected that even if he hadn't resisted, this entity might not have been able to penetrate his defenses.

Still, the Zhuxie Sword's timely warning had spared him a lot of trouble. Gu Qingfeng's satisfaction with the sword grew as he leaned down to gather some of the black powder. The moment his fingers touched it, a chilling energy surged forth, as if trying to freeze his blood. But in the face of Gu Qingfeng's immense qi and blood, the aura felt weak.

"It's definitely not an evil spirit," he murmured. "The world seems to be deeper than I thought. In addition to evil spirits, there are other strange things like this."

After some thought, Gu Qingfeng gathered the black ashes for further investigation.

Looking around, the oppressive darkness had completely disappeared. The noise of people once again filled the night air, and lights flickered across Gujiazhuang.

Just to be thorough, Gu Qingfeng ventured back into the dry well, confirming that all traces of the cold aura had dissipated. Satisfied that the strange presence had been eliminated, he climbed out.

The next morning, Gu Qingfeng summoned Gu Yang and the other warriors in charge and spoke directly.

"I dealt with the problem at Gujiazhuang last night. There's no need to worry anymore. Also, see to it that the families of the dead craftsmen are given 100 taels of silver as compensation."

"Understood!" Gu Yang replied, his expression much more relaxed.

He then asked, "Father, what exactly was that thing? Was it an evil spirit?"

Gu Qingfeng shook his head. "Evil spirits never die. I killed this thing, so it wasn't an evil spirit. As for what it was, its exact origin is still unclear."
