Joy, puzzled, replied, "Apologize for what? For winning against Grandpa? But Grandpa himself said chess is like a battlefield and mercy isn't an option. I was respecting my opponent. There's nothing wrong with that. If I had let him win on purpose, then an apology would be in order."
"Playing chess with Grandpa is supposed to be fun, you can't take it so seriously. Apologize to him since he's upset," Katherine urged gently, then turned to Ariella, "Arie, quickly go call Dr. Lyn."
After trying to persuade Joy, Katherine knelt by Grandfather Reed's wheelchair and said guiltily, "Grandpa, it's my fault. It was wrong of me to call for help because I couldn't win. I won't do it again, please don't be angry. Sister-in-law didn't do it on purpose."
Grandfather Reed scoffed, "She didn't do it on purpose? I think she did."
