Chapter 1 - Nasty Bas-relief

I think the greatest treassure and at the same time the worst curse in the world is human mind. Biggest treassure because... without our mind, we would be nothing: 'just walking pieces of sweet meat' like a friend of mine used to say. But the same treassure we are using everyday for thinking about our family or friends, our enemies or lovers, our past or future, the same tool used every single day by billions of people can become the worse curse sometimes, because if we actually starts to think deeply enough about how insignificant and useless human existence in the time-line of our universe is, shivers are one of the first reactions our body will produce, followed by signs of fear, anxiety and other different but negative feelings.

We are living our basic lives everyday, waking up every morning to go into our insignificant, sometimes shitty jobs while being quietly prisoned on a small, isolated island called unknown located somewhere in the quiet depths of this known universe.

Siences, that are each following different concepts presented in our world hurted us not as much as we may think but one day, ohhh boy... one day each piece of the puzzle we are looking at are going to perfectly fall into each other, revealing the entire picture of something that should have stayed unrevealed. Something mysterious and dangerous.

The devine truth would be so horryfying, unsettling and blinding that we instantly become crazy from it's light or we just flee away from the glowing truth back into the dark times, even if our minds would already know the truth.

We will desperatelly try to isolate ourselfs with only one, single wish.

'Forget what we saw and NEVER think about it or look for it AGAIN!'

Siences are already revealing what possible weird 'things' in the space might be living and surviving pretty close to our little island and only because of our blinding optimism, our blood is not litteraly boiling in our veins from just imagining it!

But these siences are not the reason that granted me one time glance into the depths hidden thousands of years and what maked me ( each time when I just remember about the encounter ) froze in fear!

No, no, no... It was that time when two, at first glance irrelevant things, suddenly falled into each other as the pieces of the puzzle I talked about before, revealing hidden simmilarity.

These two things were at first cassual looking article from local newspapers of Providence, located on Rhoad Island and notes of an old professor who was my great uncle.

I'm living with hope that no one EVER, founds this simmilarity I saw and are not going to do the same stupid thing I did because if you do, then God help you!

In this, I'm going hand in hand with the professor's own thoughts who probably wanted to destroy his notes and research about a big group of individuals but a sudden, mysterious death prevented him from doing so. That's why I, William Thomas Angello, was called to his home as the only relative that was mentioned in his testament. But, because Providence was too distant and I couldn't leave Boston, thanks to the detective academy I was a student on, I let the professor's belongings send to my hometown.

Five days later, eight medium-sized, brown boxes were pilled up in front of my appartman door as I came back from the hard day in academy.

15 Jully,1926: Boston

At that time, I was just 25 years old man who was ruthless and pretty sceptic. My only priority was to graduate and become a fully fledged Detective.

Next to the stacked boxes on the third floor of the building I was living in, on a big chair, was sleeping my neighbor Miss Chen, while tightly holding a brand new baseball bat. She was sleeping deeply.

With slow steps and sneaking abbilities of a skilled thief from my favourite comix while dressed in a blue suit with white shirt and blue tie, I approached Miss Chen and spoke in low-tone with wide smile.

"Miss Chen, there is a mouse on your shoulder"

Within seconds, Miss Chen opened her eyes wide and, with a good dose of strengh, she swinged her bat towards my head.

I quickly dodged the fastly approaching wooden danger and then catched the bat firmly with my right hand, pulling it out from Miss Chen's hands!

"William! My God you scared me!" Miss Chen spoke with small signs of anger in her face while I recieved three slight punches into my left shoulder from her.

"I'm sorry about that" I replayed with wide, happy smile while the bat was spinning in my right hand. I loved baseball and this bat was well made and balanced.

"This must be yours right?" I handed the bat to Miss Chen who took it and shook her head at me in desbelieve.

"This came today..." : Miss Chen pointed at the pile of boxes in front of my door and added : "One man came with them here but because you were in school, he left a note in my apartment for you. Wait for a second, I'm going to get it" she turned and walked into her own apartment door that were facing mine.

While waiting, I looked at the name-tags on the boxes and noticed something strange.

"Collection of dreams from year 1925? The C-C caseand others, lead by detective John R. Legrass? What is this junk?" I narrowed my eyes at the boxes with strange symbols covering them.

From what I just saw, only two conclusions were at that time possible.

One theory is that the old professor probably lost his mind and all he gave me is just junk: I thought but when I was about to consider the second oppinion on the stuff present, Miss Chen came back with an yellow envelope.

"Here William, this is the letter" Miss Chen spoke and was about to go back when she stoped and turned back.

"And one last thing. He said that... the stuff may not look interesting at first but nothing is what it seems as you may already know." Miss Chen then smiled and went inside her apartment with her big chair, closing her door right after as I thanked her and looked at the pile of stuff blocking my path.

"Hmm... nothing is what it seems huh. Well let's see then" I said as I moved few boxes away from my door so I can get inside my apartment and then, I went to carying and trading this 'junk' inside.

After taking the last box inside, I streched myself and went on the couch where I opened the envelope and started reading the letter I recieved.

"Dear Mr. Angello."

"My name is Jonathan Watson and with sadness filling my heart, I wish you my sincere condolences. Your great uncle was my good friend and becuase you are the only relative he ever spoke about, with good intentions of course, and because you are a detective, I'm asking you for your help while sending you the entire research Mr. George hid in my home."

'Hmm strange' I said to myself but then I qickly burried my sceptic consciousness back to the letter.

"You see, the stuff your great uncle left you are not just a bunch of useless things as you may think at first glance. Look closely, search deeply and find the hidden cluess that will lead you to me and will show you details about the mysterious death of George Gammell Angello, you great uncle who was probbably murdered. I can't say anything else because of a hidden danger that now, follows you too William, so be carefull. Only if we see each other personaly, I will reveal more.

Never ever tell anyone anything about what you find in those boxes.

I'm waiting for you William with hope of seeing you in person soon..."

"J.W."

"Well I was not expecting that. So my great uncle was murdered or what? But how? I though it was a coincidence because he was too old. 94 is a big number..." with my mind in turbulent and chaotic state, I rose from the couch, while leaving the letter lying there, and went to take a drink from my bar that was located in my office room that was at the same time a bedroom.

My appartman at that time was smaller then it's now.

It had only three rooms which were my office/bedroom, kitchen and bathroom.

With the small amount of cash I was recieving from the academy, I couldn't rent anything bigger but I was okay with it... for now at least.

Still, bigger half of the money went into renting and the other was used on food so therefore, I needed a small side job and what would be better then what I'm learning about?

With a smile, I opened a small secret detective agency in my apartment few months ago and even when jobs like 'Catch my cat' or 'Find a thief' were almost on everyday list, I was glad that at least someone was using my help.

Plus, it was paid and the money were helping me buy new clothes or more food from the store.

Comming into my office, I picked a bottle of whiskey that was half empty standing on my table. I poured it into a glass when a sudden shattering noice of my window was heard from a kitchen.

"What the-" I shut my mouth and pulled my gun from a sheet of my belt.

It was a classic Smith and Wesson Triple Lock police revolver that was able to penetrate a hole into anything that was living.

Sneaking to the entrence door of my office with a big glass in the middle of it ( saying 'Office of detective W. T. Angello' made by Miss Chen ) I quietly opened them a little.

The small crack in the door gave me everything I needed to understand the entire situation in my appartment.

In my kitchen were bent two men ( wearing black robes with cloacks ) and were searching for something in my great Uncle's stuff while one was watching around, probbably looking for me with a pump-action shotgun in his hands.

Their faces were covered in masks resembling sea creatures and all I could make out from this distance was their height.

In this situation, comming out would be the stupidest thing I could have done. The man didn't come to say 'Hi' to me.

Therefore, I aimed at the closest one with the shotgun and fired.

As the bullet spinned in the air, the man turned and instantly got shot by it.

"Hands up guys!" I said and walked out from my office as the dead man falled on the ground.

"You must be Mr. Angello" spoke one of the two and turned to face me.

"Yeah and you are?" I aimed my gun at him as a sudden fear enveloped my entire soul but before I could ask something more or make him answer, the two man spinned in the air and turned into bunch of crows with feathers black as night, flying away from my appartment through the opened window I noticed a second later, while the man on the ground turned into pile of ash.

Only answer I got scares me to this day as I remember this encounter.

"We will see each other soon again follower of light" the voice echoed from outside as I walked to my window, passing the ash on my floor, and closed it, seeing that the glass on the window was miraculously repaired.
