Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Offer

"I'm going to be direct with you, Steven," Alfonso declared, capturing Steven's attention. "I have an offer for you that could potentially make you one of the wealthiest individuals in the world."

Steven's mouth hung agape as he processed Alfonso's words. "S-Sir...?"

The disbelief was palpable on Steven's face. The idea that the King of the Philippines was extending an offer that could lead to immense wealth seemed too surreal. It was hard to fathom that a king would take such an interest in a farm boy who simply enjoyed tinkering with electronics and reading about great minds.

"You heard me correctly, Steven. I am indeed making you an offer," Alfonso affirmed, tapping his fingers on the table. "This opportunity is incredibly lucrative, especially considering the potential revolution in information dissemination, news, and entertainment that my television invention can bring. Just imagine not only hearing a broadcaster's voice but also seeing them talk. Visualize real-time images from different places transmitted to your home while you comfortably watch. Picture being able to enjoy theater plays without even leaving your house. The possibilities are endless."

Alfonso paused, his gaze fixed on Steven as he continued his pitch. "I want you to lead the Future Tech Corporation - Electronics Division. Your role will be to help me bring this revolutionary product to the global market."

After Alfonso concluded his presentation, he settled back, waiting for Steven's response. Steven stole a brief glance at Alfonso, his mind processing the weight of the proposal. Then, he raised his head, locking eyes with Alfonso.

"Thank you, Sir. That's an incredible offer, one I am truly honored to receive. But may I ask why you're doing this? I'm just a simple boy..."

Before Steven could complete his sentence, Alfonso lifted his hand, gently interrupting him. "A 'simple' farm boy who conceptualized a revolutionary product? You underestimate yourself, Steven," Alfonso chuckled softly, his tone encouraging. "If you're wondering why I've made this offer, allow me to explain."

Alfonso leaned forward, his hands folded on the table between them. "Firstly, your initiative in creating a television at a young age speaks volumes about your self-driven nature and prodigious talent. Second, you possess the natural aptitude I seek. And third, your industriousness, diligence, and resourcefulness are evident. Your ability to progress in this project without significant monetary support to create the prototype is a remarkable achievement."

Steven couldn't hide his astonishment at the praises he was receiving. Alfonso's words seemed to paint him as someone extraordinary, and it left him both honored and humbled. However, beneath the surface, he questioned why he was being lauded in such a manner. What had he truly done to deserve this recognition?

With a forced chuckle, Steven rubbed his hair, briefly averting his gaze from Alfonso. "...Thank you, Sir Alfonso, but I'm curious. Why are you praising me so highly, even though my prototype isn't complete?"

Alfonso's gaze remained steady. "You make a valid point, Steven. My praise is directed at your abilities and your mindset. In the future, progress in technology will require forward-thinking minds. Your relentless pursuit of bringing your television concept to life reflects the kind of forward-looking mindset I value."

"Is that so, sir?" Steven's voice was tinged with a mix of gratitude and uncertainty.

"Indeed," Alfonso affirmed. "So, what's your decision? Are you in or out?"

Steven pondered carefully before responding. "I'm truly honored to accept your offer, sir, and become part of your vision. But I do have concerns about my family in the States."

"Ah, your family. You can bring them here. Their house, expenses—everything will be taken care of by me. It's important to note that you'll need to become a Philippine citizen to fully accept the offer, as this position entails permanent work here," Alfonso explained, leaning forward slightly.

"Is that feasible, sir? I mean, I don't speak Spanish..."

"No need to worry. English is spoken by the people you'll be working with. In fact, I've incorporated English language training into the education reforms proposed by my ministers," Alfonso assured, aware of the significance of English in both the historical context and future developments.

Alfonso's decision to emphasize English language training in education reform showcased his forward-thinking approach, ensuring that the workforce would be equipped to engage effectively with global advancements.

As the conversation drew to a close, the weight of Alfonso's offer and the potential it held for Steven's future began to sink in. A pivotal decision lay before him, one that could reshape not only his own life but also the trajectory of technological innovation on a global scale.

"If that's the case, sir... I'm in. I accept the offer, Sir Alfonso."

A subtle smile graced Alfonso's lips as he mirrored Steven's smile. "Excellent! I'm thrilled to welcome you on board."

Steven's curiosity shone in his eyes as he asked, "So, Sir Alfonso, where do we begin?"

"To start, we'll encounter some challenges. Introducing the television to the public might not immediately convey its incredible potential, especially considering the economic conditions of the Philippines at the moment," Alexander explained, elaborating on their strategy. "However, our main objective is not immediate profit. Our goal is global recognition for the television, creating a buzz that attracts potential buyers from around the world. But for that, we need to establish a robust infrastructure to support the television industry."

Steven pondered the implications. "What do you have in mind, sir?"

"We're going to establish a broadcasting company," Alfonso announced, realizing the importance of a widespread communication network in an island nation like the Philippines.

Steven's brow furrowed, struggling to grasp the concept, but Alfonso quickly perceived his confusion. Alfonso was well aware of the need for efficient information dissemination, leading to the establishment of a broadcasting network.

"Similar to how radio companies operate with broadcasting networks, we'll create our own network for television. I've acquired assets for this purpose through property acquisitions, primarily in Quezon City," Alfonso explained. (Alfonso was aware of the historical origin of Quezon City, named after a former president, but he chose to maintain its name for familiarity.) "There, we will launch our own media company, rivaling those in the United States."

Alfonso's plan was comprehensive. "Lastly, we'll host live demonstrations to showcase the television's remarkable capabilities," he added, a mischievous smile gracing his lips.

Leaning back in his chair, Alfonso retrieved a blueprint from his drawer and placed it on the table. "This is the patented blueprint of the television," he pointed to the design. "Your role will be based at our headquarters in Quezon City, overseeing production. Study this thoroughly. I'll keep in touch through telephone communication. Once I wrap up my duties here as head of state, I'll visit. Best of luck, and may fortune favor our budding business."

Their handshake was firm, a symbol of commitment. "I'll give it my all, Sir."

"While you're in the capital, I suggest you explore the city. It will be a memorable experience. You have a room arranged at one of Manila's finest establishments, the Manila Hotel."

Alfonso's historical knowledge shone as he referenced the hotel's opening. "Thank you, Sir. I'm truly honored."

"I'll take my leave now," Alfonso announced.

As he walked back to his workshop, Alfonso's mind was active. With the production set to begin upon Steven's arrival in Quezon City, Alfonso could now focus on the core element that would drive not only manufacturing but also elevate the quality of Philippine goods.

Inside his workshop, Alfonso settled at a table. Weeks of dedicated programming work were behind him, and due to his persistence, he would wrap up the task sooner than expected. Once he finished programming the CNC language, the automated machines would make their debut on the assembly lines and factories he had acquired.

And so, the stage was set for the Philippines' modernization to truly take flight.
