ADDA’S HEART instantly sped up, giving a quick glance at her mother, already fearing her annoyance. She had to quiet her brother before the fight erupted.
“Um…Ben, you have to be patient! We will be there when we are there, so-”
“Adda”.
Her mother’s tone was far from kind, and she knew what was coming next. She sighed and prepared for whatever berating she was going to endure the rest of the trip.
“Yes?”
“Tell your brother we will be there in a few minutes. And maybe tell us about something interesting you did in your school? That will keep him shut”.
Adda blinked twice, processing the words and, even harder, processing the lack of shouting or hurtful remarks. This was definitely new.
“Oh, yes. Of course, haha. How dumb of me”.
Adda gave her an awkward smile as her mother looked at her from the front seat. She cleared her throat to buy herself time, not knowing what to explain.
