I ran through the town as fast as I could. I could still remember what has made me so happy. Mom picked up the phone when it rang while I was eating a late breakfast. Dad was on duty for the rangers so he and Torch were gone. Only mom, Megan, and Shocker were home.
Mom was on the phone for a short time before hanging up. "Who was it?" I asked finishing up my chocolate chip pancakes.
Mom turned a smile on her face. "It was professor birch. She said that Jenna came in and got her egg."
I froze, there is only one reason for Jenna to do that. "You mean it is today?" I asked getting giddy.
Mom nodded, I grabbed my dishes dumping them into the sink before running out the door. Mom called out to me but I could hear her in my excitement.
Now I stood in front of the lab. It is larger that's most of the other building around it and it is on the edge of town so that the Pokémon in its care can be happy. I go inside trying not to run.
The front room is plain with a few chairs and the front desk. I walk up and tell the man sitting there that I was here to see professor birch.
The man smiled at me. "And hello to you too John. What has you so excited?" He asks paging the professor.
"Jenna's egg is going to hatch." I answered.
The man chuckled. "That is exciting. Give me a moment." He talks into the phone and puts it back down. "You can go inside, she will be waiting by the nursery window."
He presses a button and a door opens. "Thank you." I say before quickly moving through the halls. I knew them by heart because I spent most of my free time at the lab to play with the Pokémon and learn things.
Soon enough I was outside the nursery. There was a big window next to a door. Inside were two chanseys and a gardivoir taking care of many Pokémon eggs. One incubator was empty.
"As you can see Jenna already took it." Said a female voice.
I turn to look at the speaker to see professor Birch. She is dressed in a lab coat and is carrying a camera. I rush over to her. "Where is she now?"
"Follow me." She says with a smile. She lead me down some halls and to a door marked hatching room 3. She opens it and inside is what looks like a forest clearing with a pond at the center. The walls were carefully hidden by the trees and there was no roof giving it a greater feel of being outside with out the normal dangers.
At the center near the pond was Jenna a blue gardivoir. She was what people called a shiny. She was sitting on the ground next to her egg. It was light pink with orange spots. She looked over when she heard us come in.
[Hello John.] she said her words echoing in my head. It was weird at first but I got used to it. I rushed over to hug her. "Hi Jenna!" I said. She hugged me back. [Be a little more careful.] She said floating the egg so as it would be safe from my rough actions.
I stepped back a little sad that I made her mad. "I'm sorry."
She sighed [It is ok just slow down.] she patted the ground next to her. I sat down and she put the egg in front of us. [Now we wait. It is up to them now.]
We sat there waiting, I got bored to I laid down to enjoy the spring sun. I heard my mom arrive but I was already falling asleep.
I was woken up by a cracking sound. Opening my eyes I saw Jenna leaning forward ready to meet her child. Professor Birch was recording everything behind her and mom was next to me about to wake me up.
I knew what I had to do so I backed up giving Jenna some space. The egg still cracking as the Ralts inside tried to free itself. We could hear Jenna talking to her child in Poké speak. None of us understood her.
Then all of a sudden there was a slight pink glow on the egg and it shattered. The Ralts falling on their face. They were a light pink instead of white with pale green hair. The horn however was multi colored with a crystal look.
Jenna move forward and helped her child. The child looked at her their arms raised. Jenna picked them up cooing in Poké speak. I couldn't stop looking at the little Ralts. Their horn was the same as the stone in my mom's necklace.
Once Jenna calmed down a little she looked at us and waved us over. When we were next to her she put the Ralts on the ground in front of me.
[say hello to my daughter.] she said patting her daughter's head.
"Hello." I said waving my hand. "You are so pretty." I turned to Jenna. "What is her name. Jenna shook her head. [You know our names are too hard for humans to say. Why don't you give her one like you did for me.]
I was a little sad that I wouldn't know her real name, but was happy that I could give her a nickname. I looked at her. She was holding Jenna's dress trying to hide behind it. My eyes kept glancing at her her horn. The way rainbow like colors flecked with gold seem to move as the sun hit it was beautiful.
"Opal." I said saying the name of the gemstone in my moms necklace. "Your horn looks like and opal so that will be your name." I smiled holding out my hand. "Welcome to the family Opal."
She tilted her head to see past Jenna's dress. She slowly reaches out to take my hand. When grabs it she seems to stutter as she speaks. Of course no one but Jenna understood her. Jenna tells her something and Opal smiles while facing me her hand tightening on mine. I smile in return.
Who knew that this was the moment my life changed for better or worse.
