The grand chamber had cleared, leaving King Adrian, Queen Liora, and the Minister of Crime and Social Offense in somber discussion. The young prince's implication in the crime had cast a dark shadow over their family. But as they delved into the details, it became increasingly clear that this entire situation was far more intricate than it seemed.
"I cannot believe our brother would do such a thing," Queen Liora said, her voice heavy with concern. "The evidence against him is compelling, but something feels amiss."
The minister nodded in agreement. "Your Highness, I share your unease. This matter warrants a thorough investigation. We must not rush to judgment."
The minister received his orders from the king to delve deeper into the investigation. He nodded in acknowledgment and quietly departed, leaving the king and queen alone, their heads close together, deep in conversation.
a sudden fit of coughing seized King Adrian. His face contorted with pain as he struggled to catch his breath.
"Adrian, are you all right?" Queen Liora asked, alarmed.
The king waved her concerns away, but when he pulled his handkerchief away from his lips, it was stained with blood. Fear and dread filled the room.
The queen summoned a maid to fetch water, but her alarm grew when she realized the servants were taking too long. She followed them, only to discover a trail of blood leading to where the king stood, clutching his chest.
"Adrian!" She rushed to his side, her heart pounding.
As the gravity of the situation sank in, the imperial physician was summoned to attend to the ailing king. He examined Adrian in solitude, away from prying eyes.
"Your Majesty," the physician began, his voice hushed, "you have been poisoned."
The king's eyes widened in shock. "Poisoned? Are you certain?"
The physician nodded solemnly. "The poison is rare, and it is not of our kingdom's making. It must have been brought from afar."
Adrian clenched his fists, his mind racing. "Keep this information strictly confidential, physician. Do not let anyone know, not even the queen."
"As you command, Your Majesty," the physician replied.
With a subtle signal, the king's personal bodyguard discreetly escorted the physician out of the room.
"Summon the Minister of Crime and Social Offense," King Adrian ordered. There was a dangerous urgency in his voice.
