Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: War of the Duchies III

3rd Pov

The Capital of the Di Maria Family Fiefdom, an extremely busy city compared to the rest of the region, with merchants always selling their products happily, as coins flowed through their hands like river water, with them always getting good customers, while the rest of the commoners continued their lives working, with the City Guard ensuring that the Order and the Laws of the Baron were obeyed.

Near the outskirts of the Capital of the Fiefdom of Baron Marcus Di Maria, we can see Dulocian troops hidden in the forests looking ahead, with the officers using spyglasses to better see what awaited them.

It has been 9 days since the Siege Operation that ended with the Fortress on the border being taken, with the officers spending time studying the writing of the former Commander of the Enemy Fortress to pass on false information, everything being done with extreme care by the Army's logistics and intelligence personnel who were forming.

"Hans... I have a bad feeling about the attack that will be made" Mark said to Hans as he looked at the city through his spyglass, seeing the high and sturdy walls, in addition to the various fortifications.

After the capture of the Fortress, Mark and Hans were promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant, with both still being part of the Army's hunter forces, but now with a better salary and more authority.

"Yeah... but we can't surround the city either, we won't have the capacity for that, we'll have to make a well-coordinated surprise attack, but if we manage to take this city, the entire border region of both Baronies will be under Duloc's command, all that's left is for us to continue deeper to take the two Duchies in the name of Lord von Farquaad" Hans said seriously as he stopped looking at the city through his spyglass, knowing that the Army would suffer great losses during the attack, but it would be a sacrifice in the name of Vaterland.

Mark nodded when he heard what was said, and then he turned his attention back to the city.

Then time began to pass, seconds, minutes, hours, until it was finally night, with the city's activities decreasing, many returning home, while others would do night work, mainly in the Nightclubs of the women who sold their bodies for coins.

On the city walls, we could see some guards patrolling the walls calmly, with some even sitting on the ground of the walls to play and bet a few coins to pass the time.

One of the Guards looked at the forest in front of his city, drinking water from his canteen, with his friend and workmate also drinking water, but then they would hear a noise that would scare them.

"What was th-" Before one of the Guards asked what was happening before they heard a thud, looking to the side they saw one of the Guards lying on the ground dead, with them not being able to understand what happened because they heard the noise again before they began to fall to the ground too.

This alerted what was left of the other Guards, with one running to the wall tower to sound the alarm for everyone in the city to hear while the others grabbed their bows and arrows and prepared for combat; they then saw an army of men wearing helmets with steel spikes coming out of the forest.

In Baron Marcus Di Maria's Castle, we can see that he was sleeping peacefully with his wife until he woke up to the sound of several bells ringing in the distance, He opened his eyes and went to the window; opening the window, he heard the bell sounds better.

"What's happening?!" Marcus asked, scared, because he didn't expect to suddenly hear an alarm; who would be crazy enough to attack them suddenly?

He then gets scared when he hears noises in the distance that sound like thunder in a row; he can also see from the window of his castle that several men are leaving their houses in a hurry to go arm themselves to protect the city.

Returning to the Dulocians' side, several soldiers were providing cover for the men who were running quickly carrying ladders that had already been prepared so they could quickly take over the city walls, with the men who were stronger and faster being in charge of carrying the ladders so they could take over the walls as quickly as possible.

"Fire at will! Finish off the archers quickly!" Hans shouted to the other soldiers as he reloaded his musket.

"The company that kills the least will have to pay for the beer at the celebration!" Mark shouted with a smile on his face as he pointed his musket at an archer and pulled the trigger, with him seeing the archer fall from the wall.

The soldiers on the stairs ran as fast as they could, with the first groups already placing the stairs and holding them. Several soldiers began to quickly climb the stairs, carrying sabers with them so they could go into hand-to-hand combat against the defenders.

The archers on the walls desperately tried to shoot an arrow at one of the enemies, but they died before they could even try anything, which brought fear and despair to them. With the men who were going to arm themselves still preparing, it was then that they would see some stairs and enemy soldiers climbing with swords next to them.

"NO NO NO NO NO" A soldier shouted in fear as he saw a soldier coming to where he was. He tried to knock down the soldier next to the stairs, but it didn't work, and he ended up with a saber stuck in his throat before being pulled out.

The Dulocian soldiers who were climbing the walls wasted no time; using a series of devastating and hateful attacks, they began to take the walls, with others running to take the walls that were controlling one of the city gates so they could open it.

However, some were being cornered by the enemy Guards and being attacked in groups, causing some Dulocian soldiers to die, but it didn't matter; others would replace them when climbing the walls; what mattered at that moment was to take one of the gates and unleash chaos against the enemies.

A group of 20 Dulocian soldiers faced some resistance when taking the gates, with the enemy showing ferocity to protect because they knew that when the gates were taken the city could be doomed.

4 Dulocians died 3 were slightly injured in the process; still able to fight, they wasted no time and began to move the gears to open the gates, with the gates opening very slowly, while the rest of the group prevented any other Guards from the walls from trying to stop them.

In the forest, we can see the Dulocian cavalry waiting for the gates to open so they could advance, being divided into several groups, with the cavalry having sabers or pistols in their hands, while the officers kept looking at the gates with their spyglasses to give the signal.

When one of the officers saw one of the gates opening, he waited a little longer before seeing the gate open completely, he then put away his spyglass and unsheathed his saber.

"Advance!" shouted the man as he advanced alongside his group of cavalry.

In the city, several armed men were running to help protect the walls, but then they saw one of the gates opening, and they saw the Enemy cavalry advancing against them.

This made the Guards and Militia of the city prepare for conflict, it would be then that several began to fall after hearing a noise similar to that of thunder, leaving them disoriented before being trampled by the horses and cut by the Dulocian sabers.

Some managed to quickly recover from the shock and counterattack with their lances, killing several knights before being killed by other enemies as well.

The soldiers of the Dulocian Army were taking the walls at an alarming rate and opening the other gates, which made the other groups of cavalry advance before seeing the rest of the infantry, who marched seriously with bloodlust in their eyes.

Meanwhile, in Baron Di Maria's castle, we can see the castle guards quickly preparing themselves while the Baron, along with his wife and the baby, remained protected in their room, with several personal guards and knights protecting them but serving no purpose, as they would only delay the inevitable.

"Why? Why is this happening, husband?!" Elizabeth asked worriedly as she held the crying baby.

"I don't know...." Marcus said as he tried to understand what was happening; they were too far away to be attacked by the Principality of Razia, which meant it could only be.....

"Duloc...." Marcus said as his eyes widened as if all the pieces of the puzzle fit together.
