Lessons started once more after the break finished. Retsuya and Emika glanced over at Ayato's seat. It was empty.
Emika leaned back.
"Do you think he's alright?"
She asked him.
"He's fine, probably just taking a long shit."
They whispered.
·———·
"Shall we introduce ourselves?"
The girl asked while she put her hand to her chest.
They had moved to another corridor. One where students weren't in class so that they wouldn't be interrupted. Ayato raised his hand.
"There's no need. I already know who you two are. Viera and Reina, the children of Mayoi. She's never liked me but I can't say any of the concubines have."
His last sentence got on Viera's nerves. He marched toward the boy and grabbed his tie. There was no reaction whatsoever on Ayato's face.
"Don't call our mother a concubine!"
"Isn't that what she is, I mean, she isn't the main wife of the patriarch, is she?"
"Why you—?!"
"Stop, Viera!"
Reina warned him with a loud shout. He pushed Ayato away from him.
"He's trying to provoke you. Don't react to him, he's only a coward."
The boy scoffed.
"Me? A coward? That doesn't seem like much coming from you, especially since you hired some assassins to kill me."
As Ayato spoke, the twins kept their silence. Lily's suspicions were true. Ayato truly did kill the assassins. He wouldn't be alive if he didn't.
'No... He probably offered them more than a billion.'
Viera foolishly thought. He was the type to never accept something that didn't go well for him. As a boy of the Kyouya Family, almost everything went well. All did, except for two things. The relationship with his father and the existence of Ayato Kyouya.
Viera wanted his father's praise. His mother is always telling him to stay on his father's good side.
It was difficult. Why? Because the patriarch always had his eyes on Ayato Kyouya. What made him so good? Because he was the main son? Because his mother wasn't a concubine but rather the main wife?
It enraged him. Why look over at Ayato and not at him?
To him, Ayato Kyouya was simply a nuisance. A mosquito who constantly bit him over and over, avoiding death with each swat. In the end, Viera had full confidence that he could kill the boy if needed. He wasn't alone. He also had the power of his twin sister too. That was more than enough to kill Ayato Kyouya.
"Anyways, like I asked before, what do you want with me?"
"We want to kill you, of course."
Reina extended her arm and spread her fingers. Threads rushed toward Ayato. He leapt backwards, dodging the web that it formed. Viera had entered Ayato's blind spot. He launched his fist at Ayato's back—he flipped over him, pushing Viera into Reina.
"That wasn't ordinary magic, meaning..."
"Exactly."
"We're using our Magic Seals."
Magic Seals. Not every magician had one. Magic Seals didn't appear until the late 2060s when a mutation happened in many of those who were born.
Their genetic code was adapted to one extra thing other than the ability to wield mana. It was adapted to add a unique codon to the sequence—the Magic Seal.
They're unique types of magic which are unique to the user. No one else has that type of magic. It may be similar but no two Magic Seals have the same effects. A magician can only have a single Magic Seal.
Viera's hands were on fire. His Magic Seal was called Firearms, the ability to set any part of his body on fire.
Reina shot threads from her hands. Her Magic Seal was Thread Manipulation, she could produce spider webs and shoot them out. They could also harden and cut through metal if she so desired.
The fact that they were using their Magic Seals showed that they were serious about killing Ayato. He sighed, displeased.
"You know, you can try and kill me but I'd rather not do this at school. If you want, we can arrange this after school. I'm missing my Magecraft lesson."
He said, glaring at the twins. Although his gaze was fierce, there was no bloodlust behind it. Nevertheless, the twins felt intimidated.
"You...!"
As Viera extended his arm out, a shadow crept behind him.
"You're under restraint."
The shadow grabbed Viera and threw him down to the ground. It used an Aikido technique.
"Ah! Get off me!"
"No, you're using magic and attacking a student in school. That calls for punishment, unfortunately, it's not my call."
A girl subdued Viera. Judging from the stripe on her tie, she was a second year, junior. There was something different about her other than her snow-white hair.
"A black and white armband?"
It said 'discipline.' It only meant one thing. This girl was a part of the Disciplinary Committee. A committee that worked alongside the student council to prevent any students from fighting each other, just like now.
"That white hair..."
Ayato grimaced. He averted his eyes and covered his face with his arm, pretending to scratch his head.
"Hey, let go of Viera!"
Reina shouted, turning her hand toward the white-haired girl. The girl put cuffs on Viera and rushed to Reina before she could release any threads. She knocked her hands away from her body and pushed her away from the wall, turning her away and restraining her.
"Man, children of the Kyouya Family are spoilt, thinking that they can do whatever they want."
The girl muttered as she turned to Ayato while putting cuffs onto Reina.
"Huh? Ayato?"
"N-no, you got the wrong person..."
Ayato made his voice deeper in an attempt to cause the girl to not recognise him. Of course, she did either way.
"Ayato! It's been so long!"
She rushed over to the boy and hugged him tightly.
"I've missed you!"
"Y-yeah..."
This girl was the heir to the Shirogane Family, a family in the Seven Great Families. Her name was Yukina Shirogane and she was engaged to Ayato, the eldest son of the patriarch's main wife.
"So, let me guess, they're trying to kill you in school."
He nodded, reluctantly. Yukina cared for him very much. Even if it was arranged, she had true feelings of love for him.
Ayato was afraid that she would treat them unfairly learning this fact.
Instead, she laughed. As if their struggle was something comical.
"Of course, you two aren't able to kill him. No one can."
"What?!"
Viera growled, attempting to get free.
The cuffs that they were bound with prevented mana flow in the body exiting through the proper gates.
"Ayato Kyouya, the heir to the Kyouya Family and the strongest magician of this generation. You do know that's who you're messing with, right?"
The twins' mouths gaped in amazement. Ayato looked away.
"Guess the jig is up."
Ayato wanted to keep those people who were ignorant, ignorant. Not many people knew about Ayato Kyouya. Most people assumed that Kiara Kyouya was the strongest.
For his strength and lineage, the patriarch decided to grant Ayato the title of the Magician of the Night.
