Emma Smith clenched her fists and said with determination, "I want to do something to prove my worth, to show that I have integrity, ability, and that I'm worthy of being with you! In the future, when we attend gatherings, people won't look at me and say, 'Oh, she's the lucky one who got to marry Robert Thomson.' Instead, they will address me respectfully as — 'This is Mrs. Thomson, who is capable of standing shoulder to shoulder with Robert Thomson!'"
Robert had never expected Emma to have such an opinion. He asked, "Do you want to work, or become a career woman? Or do you want to manage a company?"
"No, I know that right after college, I worked in sales," she said. "I know my own abilities. Right now, they aren't that strong. Even if you invested a large sum of money in a company for me, I would probably lose it all for you."
