Those were the most solid wooden doors Ser Yordly had ever seen a well. They were twice as big as the doors of Vol's borrowed keep – and those doors were big enough to allow mounted men through, with plenty of room in height to spare.
The whole army paused to acknowledge what they were dealing with for all of five minutes. They studied it, bit by bit, noting the weathered gargoyles that were on the battlements.
"It's stood for some five hundred years," Ser Fieldcarer told Harland, when the man came over to parlay, and relay Vol's orders.
"One can see that, and well believe it," Harland said, after Batinkog had translated.
"And it has never been taken by force," Fieldcarer said. "Every direct attack it has faced has been turned away. It has only changed hands through negotiations, or assassinations. Never have the walls been bested. Until today, I would assume. We have history to make today. Your Commander has chosen well for us to start this campaign."
