"I suppose… It was nice to be able to do something… even for what it cost us," Vagrin said. "It's a better death than I would have got before. But still… I wish'd I could have had a woman to love me."
Vale looked away uncomfortable as he said that, guilt written on her face. She'd trusted Penelope to be safe enough below deck, now that she was asleep, and she'd joined them for her share of the food.
"I think… in another time… you might have had one," Vale said awkwardly. "You were never a terrible man, Vagrin… just a little strange."
For that comment to come from her, who had always held him at the distance of a sword, it seemed to have caught Vagrin off guard. His mouth hung open for a second, before he sighed, and shook his head self loathingly. "Now you're just taking pity on me."
