"There will be men stationed on it, won't there?" Vagrin said.
"Not always. Some Earls keep their earldoms tightly sealed like that, but other Earls are more liberal with their borders. As long as there isn't another Earl encroaching on their territory, they might allow free passage for the sake of trade," Vale said. "I think that is the case for much of Earl Soleg's lands. He's more likely to see the city gates of Bathgate guarded, than just these farm lands, with a small wall doing the smallest amount of fortifying."
