He took a step forward, and lifted the first of the cross beams himself. Only then did the guards realize what he was up to, and they hurried to lift the second. Then, it was out into the night that he strode, looking for a suitable patch of wall to attempt his climbing on.
They had handed him a torch before he left, realizing that they couldn't possibly leave the Commander of the keep in the total darkness by himself, no matter the limited availability of their torches, and so it was with a certain degree of curiosity that the guards on duty peered down towards the torchlight from the top of the keep walls, only to see Vol staring at the stone of the brick.
When they looked at him too long, Vol's gaze shifted upwards, and bore right through the men. That was enough to tell them to move on, and mind their own business, giving him the relative bit of quiet that he would have wanted.
