"There's hundreds! They've got archers!" Vol shouted. "They'll run us all down!"
"Good luck running through that gate!" Nolan said easily. It was only then that Vol noticed. He hadn't stopped to wonder why no more cavalry than that first ten were coming his way – the gates were firmly closed. It seemed an impossibility.
"How?" Vol breathed, more to himself, but Nolan heard him, as he swung at the leg of a passing rider, drawing blood.
"Now that is the question, isn't it?" Nolan said gleefully. Indeed, it was Nolan's trickery that had got them into the fortified estate in the first place. No one knew how he'd done it, or where he'd disappeared to… But Vol did not miss the three full sacks that they carried, with gold peeking out from where they'd left them in the snow – a yield not any lesser than Vol and his group's own.
