"Vale, you by Penelope's side for this," Vol said. "Until there's enough distance between us and the enemy that she won't need to use her magic to defend herself."
Vale looked relieved by the order. "Very well, Lord Commander," she said.
The Sea Serpents bustled, as the new infantry reorganized themselves. Not every man had a shield, but there seemed to be enough shields between them for there to be one shield between two men. It didn't make for a perfect amount of cover from arrows, but Vol supposed if they were lucky, it could still keep them alive.
"What about the two Ser Bakers?" Penelope asked. They were in the middle of their own men, looking as stiff as unanimated boards of wood. They could not have been more terrified if they'd tried. They seemed to expect battle to break out at any moment.
