That they were mercenaries lent to the case as well. They were far stronger than the average citizen. For them to have been murdered in such a brutal fashion was terrifying in an exciting sort of way. It meant that there were men out there stronger than them, or at least more cunning. It led to suspicion being cast on the higher ranked mercenaries.
"They're the only ones that could have done it," was the consensus.
Vol and the other Sea Serpents had worried that they might be implicated in the case, but the guards had only visited Thornhand's residence once to question them, and Thornhand had given them a hearty testimony, swearing for all he was worth that the Sea Serpents had all been dining with him when the attack had occurred.
