The shouts from the Syndrans alerted them to the closeness of the Yarmdon newcomers. They didn't have the leeway to look upon their enemy without revealing themselves, and so their signal – Vol had said – would be when the screams start.
It had been amusing seeing the stricken looks of Harlen and Swil's faces as Vol and his men left them. The heroic vision that they'd had for themselves just a short time earlier had been so quickly blown away.
A pattering came next.
"Is that rain, or arrows?" Harland said.
"I can't pissing tell if it's raining anymore. Too cold to feel it," Silverfish said.
"Arrows," another Sea Serpent man guessed.
The pattering intensified, and quickly enough, Vale found herself in agreement. "Arrows," she said with a nod. "Do we move?"
"Not yet," Vol said.
They heard a scream, short and pained.
"Arrow wound," he said. "Stay."
