"No," Vol said eventually, surprised at the anger in his voice. It came with such an intensity that one might have thought it was anger merely at the fact that Penelope had dared to attempt to give him an order. He stood his ground, saying no more than that, but the swing of his hammer that soon followed and cast five men flying backwards seemed to illustrate that decision better than anything else.
Chapter 25 – The Docks
"They'll come," Varn said. His mind worked without him, even without him thinking of the solution to their problems with direct intention, his mind would have weighed it up regardless. After years of experience on the battlefield, he knew the worth of each instance of victory, and its mass, and he weighed up the wound on his shoulder, along with those two monsters that pursued him, and the closeness of Vol's approaching main force, and he came to that horrifying conclusion.
