"Will you tell me to stop?" Vol said, evaluating her carefully. She knew his strength by now. It was almost alarming the rate that she believed in him. Vol knew her well enough too – and he knew that those tears that she cried were not for the Sea Serpents, but for the enemy that they would slay as they burst their way through. Hundreds would most surely die.
Penelope shook her head. "If I did, you would not listen," she said. "And I would not have you die, Vol, no matter what is to happen, you must live."
"For what reason?" Vol said. It wasn't at all the right time to ask, but he had always wondered about it, when she said such things. For what reason did a girl with a heart as kind as hers wish to see a man like him live.
