"It ran out of blood, I think," Harland said, by way of explanation, when Vol spied the corpse of the one-armed Ogre lying nearby. The Ogre Knight was in similarly poor condition, now that it was missing an eye, but it didn't seem ready to collapse just yet.
Vol simply nodded at the statement. It had served its purpose. The infantry had been held back, given their forces the time that they needed to recuperate. They were to two hundred men, a single Ogre Knight, and three hundred villagers – but those that remained were stronger than those that had departed. Vol felt sure of that. Even dismissing the likes of Silverfish and Vale, his other soldiers seemed to have a stronger look in their eyes. They'd been faced with the pressure of ten thousand men for longer than any soldier ought to be, and yet they'd survived. They'd survived long enough to get a drink to refresh themselves, and long enough to see their exit through the ranks, and the possibility of salvation.
