The very Command empowering them drained away, as that black circle, fifty feet wide, sprung up, and hands reached out from it, dragged at the hands of nearby corpses and at the hands of nearby living men alike.
It was like a giant mouth – Vol thought he saw the summoning circle truthfully now. There was a hunger to it that it hadn't recognized before. Sacrifice. Pandora always spoke that world. Those summoning circles were no different. They wanted something in exchange for their appearance. They needed a reason to come forth.
