Even if Nolan didn't sense it in Vol's primitive terms, even if he used mind instead of instinct, he should have sensed what was about to happen… Why was he so calm? He had to have something up his sleeve, didn't he?
The sense of wrongness that Vol usually felt when he was in the middle of someone else's scheming, it felt off. Something was missing about it. He sensed that there was danger, and heat, but it didn't warn him strongly enough to look at it. It was as though someone had told a white lie – that was the sort of dishonesty that he felt.
He frowned, looking around. Something was missing. His feet were locked in place. He should have been charging the enemy line by now. What was he doing standing around – what was Nolan doing standing around?
