Chereads / Harmony Nexus: Nightfall Moon / Chapter 3 - Sanctuary

Chapter 3 - Sanctuary

A black sedan car cruised along the highway, entering an abandoned port area. It came to a halt beside a dilapidated warehouse. Eve and Irina stepped out of the car, and as it drove away, they found themselves alone in the desolate surroundings.

Three days had passed since Irina had decided to join Eve in her mission to save Luna.

Feeling restless inside the confines of the internet cafe, Irina proposed constructing a more suitable headquarters for their operations.

"So, is this rundown warehouse going to be our new base?" Eve inquired, a hint of curiosity in her voice as she gestured toward the weathered building.

Eve was dressed modestly in plain attire, carrying a simple black backpack. Most of her belongings remained at the internet cafe where she had secured a room.

Irina's response was laced with a tinge of offense. "Seriously, Evie? You think I'd settle for this place?"

With a playful yet enigmatic smile, Irina continued, "This warehouse is just a cover. Follow me."

Irina confidently led the way, suitcase in hand, navigating through the overgrown vegetation and muddy terrain with a cheerful demeanor. Eve trailed behind, careful not to soil her clothes as she observed Irina's confident stride.

After a brief trek, they reached an old well, its top concealed by a wooden lid. Curiosity piqued, Eve watched as Irina pulled out her phone and deftly interacted with an app.

Mechanical noises resonated from the well, causing the wooden lid to lift, revealing a tube that stretched twice the height of an adult.

Without hesitation, Irina stepped into the open tube, her nonchalance infectious. Eve sighed, momentarily awestruck by the grandeur of the reveal, and followed suit.

"How much did this cost you?" Eve inquired as the tube door closed, initiating their descent.

Irina's response was nonchalant. "Not much, just my pocket money for a year."

"Just your pocket money?" Eve's annoyance was thinly veiled in her retort.

Irina sensed Eve's irritation and swiftly intervened. "Relax, Evie. I had my reasons. Let's just say it was fulfilling a childhood dream."

As the elevator reached its destination, Irina stepped out, Eve close behind. They found themselves in a dimly lit corridor that led to a sturdy iron door with an electronic panel beside it.

From her pocket, Irina produced a black card and swiped it on the panel. The door opened with a resounding sound, unveiling a pitch-dark room.

As Irina entered, the room's lights and temperature control activated, revealing a space as vast as a football field.

In the well-lit expanse, an awe-inspiring scene awaited. The room seemed to encapsulate a world within itself, seamlessly blending cutting-edge technology with the comfort of a luxurious game room. It was a fusion of a covert laboratory and an upscale gaming haven.

A cluster of towering computers dominated the room's center, their expansive monitors emanating a brilliant blue luminescence, mirroring the vibrant virtual universes they created. Irina, as a technological prodigy and heir to one of the world's leading technology conglomerates, Wolf's Industry, had manifested a space that encompassed the pinnacle of twenty-first-century innovation.

In a corner, an array of game consoles displayed a diverse collection of titles, ranging from thrilling adventures to immersive simulations—providing entertainment for hacking sessions and strategic planning. Plush black sofas were strategically positioned before the wide monitors, inviting weary minds to relax.

Adjacent to the recreational zone, a compact kitchenette stocked with food and beverages offered sustenance during prolonged work sessions, eliminating the need to depart the headquarters. It was a haven where creative ideas could flourish while savoring favorite snacks.

The doors on either side of the expansive room hinted at concealed chambers harboring further secrets, adding an air of intrigue to the atmosphere.

This secret haven showcased Irina's unwavering commitment to Eve's cause. It wasn't merely an indulgence; it was a testament to their alliance.

"Welcome to Sanctuary," Irina proclaimed, extending her arms as if to embrace the entirety of the room.

Eve's response was measured, her tone lacking the expected enthusiasm. "It's quite impressive."

Irina's disappointment was palpable. "Just 'impressive'? I was hoping for a bit more excitement, Evie."

Motioning toward the right-hand door, Irina added, "Bedrooms are that way—take your pick. There's also a direct exit to the surface."

With a gesture to the left, Irina continued, "And that's the testing and simulation combat room. I figured you'd need a place to hone your magic and combat skills. My dad helped set it up."

"Thank you, Ira," Eve acknowledged. Though her expression remained reserved, her gratitude resonated in her voice.

Irina recognized the depth of Eve's appreciation, and a sense of satisfaction washed over her.

From their initial encounter, Eve had presented herself as detached, her voice devoid of emotion, as if resigned to her circumstances. But now, even in her understated manner, her eyes burned with fierce determination.

"Why don't we start with a friendly sparring match? It'll be a good warm-up," Irina suggested with a lighthearted grin, fully embracing the camaraderie of the moment.

Irina moved with the finesse of an experienced fighter, her movements a dance of evasion as she gracefully dodged the intricate barrage of light swords launched by Eve. Each of Eve's creations, shaped by her skill in Creation magic, was precise and accurate, as if meticulously crafted to fit a predetermined pattern.

Their simulated battle unfolded with a seamless harmony of strategy and skill. Irina's exoskeleton armor emphasized speed and agility, giving her an edge in nimbleness rather than sheer force. Despite its lightweight design, the armor retained impressive durability.

Eve, clad in a medieval knight's armor reimagined as an elegant dress, manipulated the light swords with a silent intensity, showcasing the ruthless efficiency that was characteristic of her even in the realm of games. Her three months of practicing magic had propelled her beyond novice status, unveiling a prowess akin to that of a seasoned veteran.

In the midst of their sparring, Irina harnessed her mana, channeling it into her hand where blue lightning crackled to life. Swiftly, she launched an attack on the light swords, and in a spectacular chain reaction, the swords disintegrated under the power of her assault. Her unique blue lightning attribute granted her both immense speed and strength, as well as the capability to execute chain attacks that amplified the damage dealt to her targets.

As the light swords shattered, a triumphant smile graced Irina's lips. Empowered by her success, she decided to unleash her own magic – the fifth-class spell she had christened 'Sprite Flash.' A magic circle formed beneath her, emanating a bluish glow that held a spell of this caliber in place.

'Sprite Flash' was a testament to Irina's ingenuity. Employing her exoskeleton armor as a conduit, she engulfed herself in high-voltage blue lightning, affording her the ability to vanish in the blink of an eye.

With swift precision, Eve erected a spherical magic barrier, effectively shielding herself from all directions, anticipating Irina's forthcoming maneuver.

Behind Eve, a cascade of electrical sparks signified the manifestation of 'Sprite Flash.' And just as suddenly, Irina reappeared in that very spot. Her hand, charged with the vivid hue of blue lightning, transformed into a claw-like configuration, and she struck at Eve's barrier with overwhelming force. The barrier, seemingly invincible, shattered like fragile glass against the might of Irina's assault, propelling Eve backward.

The look of astonishment that graced Eve's features was unmissable. Her barrier, an embodiment of pure mana, boasted defenses far surpassing conventional shields, resilient even against attribute-based weaknesses. Yet, Irina's blue lightning had bypassed its defenses with astonishing ease.

Collecting herself, Eve rose to her feet, finally comprehending the intricacies of the situation. "Instantaneous movement, how vexing," she muttered, a flicker of annoyance surfacing in her words.

A playful taunt dripped from Irina's voice, her amusement evident. "Caught on quickly, Evie."

Once again, Irina triggered 'Sprite Flash,' poised to strike anew. Her confidence was unmistakable, a result of her intimate understanding of Eve's barrier and its vulnerability to simultaneous attacks from opposing sides – a tactic that her blue lightning could execute.

Eve's response was a subtle smile, a challenge extended to her friend. Despite the unfolding spectacle, her demeanor retained its steadfast composure, unyielding in the face of Irina's exceptional talents.

Irina vanished again with 'Sprite Flash,' reappearing directly in front of Eve. Yet, something was awry; the electricity in her hand had vanished. As Irina attempted to convey her astonishment, a soundless breath left her, her oxygen supply abruptly halting. Panic surged, her features contorting in discomfort, and she collapsed to the ground, the agony consuming her.

"It seems that's sufficient," Eve's emotionless voice reverberated through the space. In an instant, Irina's breath returned to its rhythm, her bewildered state a stark contrast to her prior distress.

Eve proceeded to offer an explanation, her tone gentle. "Vacuum space. Lightning cannot manifest in a vacuum, as there are no ions and electrons to facilitate it. Even your blue lightning, born of magic, adheres to the laws of physics during materialization."

Awe laced Irina's expression as she absorbed the wisdom behind Eve's explanation, recognizing that Eve was a genius, not solely reliant on magic but possessing a profound understanding of scientific principles.

With Eve's counsel, Irina recovered from the ordeal. "Let's take a breather; your instant moves have expended a significant portion of your mana," Eve suggested calmly, casting a glance toward Irina, who still rested on the floor.

Irina, however, was not ready to let the matter slide. "Evie, you sound as if you can gauge my mana reserves."

Eve's reply was matter-of-fact, innocent even. "Isn't that normal?"

Irina was astounded by Eve's response, her innocence a mystery within a mystery. She realized anew that her friend held secrets and depths that extended beyond appearances.

Their sparring session resumed, each girl pushing herself

and her abilities to new limits. Irina, fueled by determination, launched a flurry of lightning-fast assaults, while Eve's strategic maneuvers countered every advance.

As the battle raged on, it became evident that Irina's agility and lightning attribute granted her an upper hand in close-quarters combat, enabling her to navigate her way through attacks and deliver precise strikes. Conversely, Eve's Creation magic provided her with a diverse arsenal, making it arduous for Irina to predict her tactics.

Despite the intensity of their fight, mutual respect shone through. Irina admired Eve's inventive application of magic, while Eve was intrigued by Irina's lightning attribute and her capacity for rapid-fire attacks.

At the peak of their confrontation, both girls elected to go all out. Irina unleashed her most formidable spell, 'Sprite Burst,' summoning a colossal magic circle that heralded a mammoth storm of blue lightning, engulfing the entire battlefield. The crackling energy surged around her as she charged at Eve with fierce determination.

Undaunted, Eve created an intricate array of light swords, erecting a defensive barrier. The swords whirled with tremendous speed, forming a dazzling spectacle of light as they countered the tempestuous thunderstorm. The clash between elements transformed the simulated battleground into an awe-inspiring display.

For a brief moment, equilibrium seemed to reign, but then Eve's barrier began to fracture under the relentless barrage of Irina's lightning. Determination ignited within Eve's eyes as she concentrated her mana, reinforcing the barrier's defenses with renewed vigor.

Observing Eve's efforts, Irina decided to pour her energy into the endeavor, heightening the power of the thunderstorm tempest and unleashing a torrent of lightning strikes.

The air crackled with raw energy, and the very ground quivered as the two opposing forces collided. With Irina pushing herself to her utmost limits, her eyes glowed with unwavering determination.

Suddenly, the barrier surrounding Eve gave way, and the thunderstorm tempest surged forth. A momentary shockwave of blinding light engulfed the battlefield as their combined mana collided.

When the luminance subsided, both girls lay sprawled on the ground, their chests heaving with exertion. Though their clothing bore the marks of their battle, their eyes radiated exhilaration and adrenaline.

"That was incredible!" Irina exclaimed, a blend of awe and fatigue lacing her voice.

Eve responded with a hint of a smile, acknowledging the sentiment. "Indeed, it was. Your lightning attribute is nothing short of remarkable."

Irina's grin was infectious, her appreciation evident. "And your Creation magic is unparalleled. With you, I can never anticipate the outcome."

Eve chuckled softly. "I guess it's part of the fun."

As they recaptured their breath, both girls engaged in a dialogue, analyzing the intricate details of their duel. Amid the fierce competition, they recognized the value of their sparring sessions extended beyond mere rivalry, constituting an invaluable journey of learning and growth – a journey they were embracing together.
