Chapter 11 - 11

Watching mortals go about life was tiring - exhausting for some.

But not Kyan.

Kyan has seen many futures and predicted many outcomes only for things to end differently than he hoped. In a way watching the world of mortals was like an open book, with no true beginning - or end.

He will admit that life as a Watcher was incredibly dull so Kyan often turned to the drama life of mortals for a slice of entertainment.

There's no time for such trivial matters, though.

Kyan landed in his brother's study. He took in the sagging bookshelves packed with books, a desk nearly covered in stacked books and piles of paper. Sketches of mythical creatures pinned to the wall each with an elemental symbol.

The element of fire belonged to a massive fox with six tails - the symbol appeared to be glowing on its forehead. A small figure stood beside the figure.

Upon closer inspection, Kyan realized it was his brothers' firstborn child - Shay - according to the mess scribble on the bottom.

Interesting.

The Fire god had already awoken in the form of a fox. Things were certainly changing.

The doorknob rattled and Kyan stepped back from the picture and watched the door open. His brother was standing in the doorway with a wild look in his eyes.

His skin was just as pale as Kyan remembered, but now he had a few lines to show how much time had passed.

The golden bejeweled crown on his head was crooked, his robe was wrinkled. King Agnus.

Kyan watched him close and locked the door. He summoned a flame and then flicked his wrist toward the empty fireplace. A fire now warming the room, Agnus removed his robe and crown piling it onto the only empty chair.

Besides the one Agnus sat in behind the desk.

Agnus slumped backward releasing a frustrated sigh. "What am I doing wrong?" he whimpered struggling to hold back tears. "I don't know what I'm doing."

To see his brother at his breaking point was heartbreaking and funny - kinda. Kyan was used to seeing Agnus portray himself as cold, hard, and pulled together - oftentimes being over cruel to his son, Shay.

Growing up, Agnus had been funny - always one to crack a joke or make someone smile.

Kyan hardly recognized the weeping man before him. He wondered if he should reach out - say something, but that would alter the outcome of the story.

Leaving Agnus he made his way through the hall occasionally running into guards. He found the nursery where Agnus's wife had given birth to two boys.

Liam Helix Yarrow. A strong name he'll grow into.

Maori Evander Yarrow. A unique name - surprising that Shay picked that name.

But then again, Kyan thought, amused. He's always been creative.

Satisfied, Kyan made his way toward Mallory's chambers on the second floor. It would've been hard to miss a door made of vines and blooming flowers.

He stepped inside to see plants hanging from the ceiling and vines twisting up the bed posts. A vase of flowers sat on her vanity looking as though they'd been freshly picked.

Mallory was nowhere in sight.

The door to her balcony was open and she stood leaning on the railing playing with something between her hands.

Kyan approached careful not to get too close, but close enough to tell she was tossing a metal figurine in her hands. Taking one final look around the room, Kyan left quickly stepping out into the hall.

Elemental beings like the fox Shay bonded to give off a particular scent Watchers can smell. It grew stronger as he made his way down the hall and around the corner.

Shay's bedroom door was open and he could see him - or hear him rather - taking swings at his bed posts with what sounded like a dull sword.

He must still be reeling after that argument with his father.

Kyan saw the fox lying curled up on the rug his head resting on his paws. He saw his nose twitch and his eyes flew open - he bared his teeth letting out a low growl.

Shay stopped hacking away at the bedpost to huff, "If I'm ruining your beauty sleep - go outside 'till I'm done, Silvyr."

Kyan stepped back and leaned against the wall waiting for Silvyr to make an appearance.

When the fox slipped into the hall the door slammed behind him. Silvyr sat back on his hunches looking down at Kyan.

"Surprised to see me?" Kyan whispered.

Hardly.

"might I ask why you're here?" though Kyan knew the answer, he wanted to know what the Fire god experienced from his own perspective. "Is this new body...strange?"

Silvyr looked down at his paws, thinking. To answer your first question. For years it just felt like I was floating - I was surrounded by darkness so I assumed I died.

"Hm."

Then I wound up in this body hearing a voice telling me to complete my destiny. Silvyr looked back over at him, his mark glowing. Getting used to this body was weird I'll admit.

"Have you figured out what your destiny is?"

Silvyr huffed. Why are you asking me such trivial questions? Are you not a Watcher? One who can see the future?

"I am. I have, but things hardly go to plan." Kyan hummed, folding his hands in front of him. "When will you tell him who - or what you are?"

I...I dunno. I don't think I will.

Interesting.

"I must head back, now." Kyan pushed from the wall. "It was a pleasure meeting you." he bit his lips to refrain from saying again.

Do you know what my destiny is?

Kyan cocked his head, pondering. "The end is near, Silvyr. Protect him."

Before Silvyr could question him any further, Kyan vanished.
