As soon as Calais leaves the room, I let out a sigh of relief. Being alone with him always makes me feel on edge, like I'm constantly walking on thin ice.
I have to admit, though, when he mentioned we were soon leaving Cairns, I got excited. Unfortunately, instead of being with Gavin, I am left with Calais instead.
A knock on the door interrupts my thoughts. I quickly compose myself before answering it. It is a young woman, standing at the door and holding a tray of food.
"Good day, Miss. The inn owner asked me to bring this for you and your companion," she says politely.
I thank her, take the tray from her, and set it down on the table. The smell of fresh bread and stew fills my nostrils, making my stomach growl in hunger.
I turn to look at Calais, who has just re-entered the room. He's holding a bundle of firewood and some matches in his arms.
