"All the things you've just said, why did you do it, Lyrica?" Eliana asks. "Aren't you in love with Calais?"
I snort. "Unfortunately, I am not the type of person who will settle for less, unlike you."
I know it was unfair of me, to blame her for the Heroine role that is pushed to her by the gods. But I am also a human. I am jealous of the things she has, things I want the most but can never have.
"Do you hate Cornelius so much that you will do everything so he will throw you away?" she asks. "Do you hate him so much that you wished for him to be disgusted by you?"
"Are you disgusted then, Eliana?" I ask. "Are you disgusted that I am pregnant with a full-blooded monster's child?"
Instead of answering, she says, "They want you to get rid of the child, Lyrica. If not, they will send you to the gallows."
"And if I get rid of my child?"
"You will keep your life and you will serve the king."
