Calais reluctantly turns and starts walking away, but not before he throws a final word over his shoulder. "You may think you've won her, Cornelius, but you will never own her heart. I know her better than anyone else will ever be."
I frown. As much as I want to deny it, the love I feel for him won't be easy to erase. But I made my choice. I can't keep going back to someone who would never put me first.
"Is what he said true?" Cornelius asks.
I look at him and he stares down at me. Cornelius pulls back to look at me, his hand cupping my cheek.
"What do you mean?" I ask, unsure of what he's getting at.
"That I will never own your heart?" Cornelius clarifies, his eyes searching mine.
I hesitate for a moment before answering truthfully. "It will be hard to forget about Calais."
"How much do you like him?"
My frown deepens. "Why do you need to know that?"
