Chapter 4 - Chapter Four

The training ground buzzed with activity as pack members gathered for their daily training session. Kairo stood tall and imposing, his keen eyes scanning the group. There was an air of tension, a sense of anticipation, as everyone prepared for the rigorous training ahead.

Maira found herself amidst the crowd, her determination overshadowed by frustration. Kairo seemed to go out of his way to avoid her during training, choosing Lila as his partner instead. She couldn't help but wonder why, but her thoughts were interrupted when Basil, Kairo's friend and Beta, approached her with a confident grin.

"Hey, Maira, mind if I join you for training?" Basil's voice had a hint of flirtation as he spoke.

Surprised by his sudden interest, Maira hesitated but replied with a slight blush, "Sure, I don't mind."

Training with Basil proved to be intense and challenging. He was skilled and supportive, and his flirtatious demeanor put Maira at ease. She listened to his instructions carefully and focused on honing her abilities, eager to prove herself. While Maira continued training with Basil, she could feel Kairo's watchful gaze on them, and she couldn't shake the sense that he disapproved. Still, she tried to convince herself that Kairo's opinion didn't matter to her. She was an individual with her own choices, and she could train with whoever she pleased.

"You're quick, Maira! It's like trying to catch a bolt of lightning," Basil said with a laugh, enjoying their banter.

Maira's cheeks flushed with a mixture of embarrassment and pleasure. "Thanks, Basil. You're not too shabby yourself," she replied, finding his enthusiasm contagious.

During a brief break in their training, as Basil wiped the sweat from his brow, he looked at Maira with a twinkle in his eye. "You're doing great, Maira," he said, his voice smooth and alluring. "You know, after this, we could grab some dinner together. What do you say?"

Maira's eyes widened in surprise at the invitation. She wasn't accustomed to such attention. "Sure, I'd like that," she replied, thinking the past few days had been tough, and she could use some friends.

Basil beamed, his warm and genuine demeanor putting Maira at ease. "Great! I know this amazing place in town. We'll have a -." Before he could finish his sentence, Kairo materialized beside them, his presence felt like a sudden storm. His amber eyes glinted with a possessive intensity that sent shivers down Maira's spine.

"Maira," Kairo's voice was low and commanding, "You're here to train, not to socialize."

Maira's eyes narrowed, "I can handle my training and socialize too, Kairo. It's not a crime to talk to my fellow pack members," she retorted, her voice filled with defiance.

Kairo's expression hardened, and for a moment, Maira thought he might lose his temper. But instead, he maintained his composure, albeit with a menacing undertone. "Your place in this pack is dependent upon whether you can prove yourself worthy, not on whether you can distract my Beta from his duties," he stated firmly.

The comment struck a nerve within Maira, igniting her anger. Without thinking, she lashed out, her fist connecting with Kairo's jaw in a swift, unexpected move. Kairo staggered back in surprise, clearly not anticipating her reaction. How dare he dictate her choices? How dare he act as if he knew what was best for her? She wouldn't let anyone belittle her just because she couldn't shift.

She moved in to throw another punch, but this time Kairo's reflexes were lightning-fast. He effortlessly dodged her attack, his movements fluid. Before Maira could react, he seized her arm with an iron grip, holding her in place.

"Maira," Kairo's tone was calm, but the undercurrent of authority was unmistakable, "your anger will be your downfall. You must learn to control your emotions and focus on your training. Your actions have consequences, not just for yourself, but for the entire pack."

Maira's breath was ragged. She couldn't deny that Kairo's combat prowess was impressive, and despite her anger, a part of her respected him for his strength and leadership.

"I won't be controlled by anyone," she retorted defiantly, trying to pull her arm free from his grasp.

Kairo's grip remained firm, but he didn't hurt her. Instead, he took a step back, releasing her. "You misunderstand, Maira. It's not about control. It's about responsibility and protecting the pack."

His words struck a chord within her, and she realized that maybe he wasn't trying to stifle her independence. Perhaps he was pushing her to be better, to be strong enough to protect herself and others.

Before she could dwell further on her thoughts, Kairo suddenly shifted into a defensive stance. "Come at me again," he commanded, his eyes challenging her.

Maira's anger had subsided slightly, replaced now with a determination to prove herself. She launched another attack, this time with more focus and precision. But no matter how hard she tried, Kairo effortlessly dodged and countered her moves, his movements calculated and precise.

He threw punches and kicks her way, making sure they were within her ability to dodge, testing her limits. Despite his ferocity, Maira couldn't shake the feeling that he was being easy on her, controlling the intensity of the fight to avoid causing her harm.

After what seemed like an eternity of sparring, Kairo finally made his move. With a swift maneuver, he brought her to the ground, pinning her beneath him. "Concede the fight, Maira," he said firmly, his breath brushing against her ear.

Though she struggled beneath him, she knew she was defeated. With a defeated sigh, she whispered, "I concede."

Kairo released her, standing up. He offered her a hand to help her up. As she rose to her feet, Kairo leaned in to whisper in her ear, "Say no to Basil. He's not what you need." He said firmly.

Maira's eyes narrowed, but before she could respond, Kairo had already turned away, leaving her to contemplate his words and her own emotions.
