Chapter 48 - An unexpected visit and an unexpected question

Thanatos was eating in his room. Aurora, Camilla, and all the others had classes to attend; he instead only had classes to teach at 11 a.m.; at this very moment, it was 8:34 p.m. Thanatos sat in a wooden chair; the color of the wood on the chair he sat on and the table he was eating from were identical.

Thanatos sat alone on this chair in his apartment and ate from a soup plate, a frittata soup that he had prepared himself.

His father and mother had taught him cooking from an early age; even if he was the successor of the Gravestones after Areus, cooking was, according to their opinion, a skill that everyone needed to survive. On missions, he would never have his maids with him to prepare him a perfect meal.

He would be there for himself and the environment; if it came hard on hard, he had to be able to cook something edible in any situation, and exactly that Thanatos also learned.

He had seasoned the soup perfectly; it had a lot of flavor and, at the same time, was not too intense. Thanatos took one full spoonful after the other until he ate the plate completely empty.

When he was done with the soup, he took his plate and put it in the sink. Turn on the faucet and let the plate sprinkle with water for a few seconds.

He turned off the faucet again, left the plate in the sink, and turned to the cabinet where he kept the meat plates.

His hand was reaching for a plate when he heard someone knocking three times on the door. Thanatos walked over, took his key, and unlocked the door.

He opened the door and saw a person he knew; the person was Morgana.

Thanatos didn't have the slightest idea why she was here, but he wasn't averse either. He neither disliked nor liked her. During their first mission, he thought of her as a good person and was sure that the two of them could become good friends.

"Do you need something, Morgana?" Thantos was not perfect when it came to reading other people's emotions. But he was good at finding out how a person behaved based on the actions he personally saw, and in his opinion, Morgana was a person who did not trust a person easily. She was open and said what she thought, but at the same time, she would never reveal more about herself than was needed.

It was clear that Morgana was nervous; she opened her mouth multiple times and then closed it without saying what she wanted to say. Her feet were looking away from him; the image of her in this very situation was more similar to that of a person who tried to run away from a conversation with him.

"If it is too hard for you to talk about it, how about you come in and eat something with me? I have soup and chicken overbacken with cheess and rise as a side dish."

Thantao's words calmed Morgana a little bit. He managed to distancing her with that. From her thoughts, Morgana walked inside the apartment and followed Thanatos to the living room.

Thanatos gave her the understanding that she should wait here while he brought her some chicken with rise. Morgana refused the offer and went by soup.

Thanatos was glad because he had more soup than chicken here he could spare with her. He walked inside, and Morgana's nervousness came back.

'Fuck, can I really talk about this with him? I mean, this is so uncomfortable.' Morgana thoguth.

"Since when are you a person who cares about what she says?"

A deep, manly voice resounded in her head—the memory of a person who let her emotions dissipate as if they never existed.

The moment Thanatos walked in, he noticed in an instant that the atmosphere around Morgana was different. It was as if Morgana got swiched with her twin; in the meantime, he was in the kitchen, and she got switched to the Morgana he went on his first mission on.

Thanatos would try to figure out the cause of the change in her atmosphere during the talk they would have now.

"Here is your soup, so why are you here? I don't know you well, but I think I know you well enough that you would not talk to someone about your feelings."

Thanatos changed his tone to a more serious one, and with the aura Morgana gave her, this way of talking should be better.

"I heard that you are friends with Renmaru Shinigami; is that right?"

Thanatos was surprised as he heard that and was well aware of the fact that she was cautious about Renmaru. In his opinion, he thought that Morgana would simply handle the situation with Renmaru.

by avoiding him, but with the fact that she wanted to sit opposite him in a direct conversation and talk to him about who knows what.

Thanatos nevertheless answered faster than Morgana expected.

"Yes, I know him very well; if you want to talk to him, then I won't stop you. I just ask you to think twice about what you say before you say it. Renmaru is not a bad guy, but at this moment he is still down because of the psychopath."

Morgana now knew what it meant to have a friend behind you who helped you and would be worthy of being called a true friend.

Thanatos was a true friend; he was that type of friend who supported his friends and loved them even if they were not present. He could say many things about Renmaru in this kind of situation. But he still decided to talk about the things that were important and had to be said.

"Don't worry, I will try to talk to him without letting my emotions run wild, but in the end, I can only try doing that. I don't know how I will behave myself if he now really stands right in front of me."

Morgana took one deep breath and then proceeded, "That's the reason why I would like to ask you to stand beside us and stop me before I say something stupid."

Morgana looked at Thanatos; the soup in front of her had not been touched once during the time the two of them spoke. Thanatos, too, left his food untouched; he was sure that there would be nothing more disrespectful if he ate during their conversation.

Thanatos laid his knife and fork down and gave Morgana a question he needed to ask. A question that would influence the decision.

"I can do that, but I still have a question for you, Morgana: why do you still care so much about the time before you got turned into a grim reaper? This time is more than a century old. What is it that-"

Thanatos stopped talking as he noticed how a single tear began to run down Morgana's cheek. He thought that how he talked was right, but in the end, he knew nothing and wanted to revisit time.

'There, I talk about thinking twice before you say it out loud.'

Haruka wiped away her tears and looked deeply into Thanatos' eyes.

"All right, if you want to know, I'll tell you. I'll tell you the reason why I can't forget and why I'd rather be dead than a grim reaper to this day."
