Chapter 6 - Connecting with the enemy

"She will be bait!"

Zion's words kept swirling around Blair's head as she walked towards the new born vampire's hideout.

"How dare he use me as bait?" She hissed exaggeratedly "what an asshole!"

The abandoned manor sits barren in the middle of the woods. "This is definitely a place a vampire will live in, especially rogue ones!"

Treading carefully, Blair makes her way into the manor.

A striking unpleasant smell of rotten corpses greeted her nose as she stepped in.

Blair swept her emerald eyes across the havoc beneath her. Pale lifeless bodies are scattered all across the first floor, must be the unfortunate victims of the vampires.

Blair cringed, "what a load of rotten bastards!"

"Who are you? A human?" A hoarse voice resonates through the walls.

"Yes, I'm a weak human!" Blair responded, making her way further into the room, "I want you to help me become one of you! Please!"

Interested, the man responds, "you want to be a vampire? Come up!"

"Thank you!"

Blair headed upstairs to the second floor. A group of pale hungry vampires awaits her.

"You must be stupid to come here, and alone." He acknowledged, and a wicked laughter followed

Blair laughs too, "you must be dead stupid to think I came here alone!"

At her words, Damien, Zion, and Cara barges into the manor.

Alerted, the vampires hops off the bannister and landed on the first floor to fight them off.

Alone and safe to execute her plan, Blair moves closer to the handrail on the second floor. The iron is rusted and easily breaks.

Pretending to be pushed, Blair hurled herself into the bannister - it could not carry her weight and breaks in half.

Blair goes falling from the second floor to the first.

She screamed, "Help!" Knowing very well that Damien would step in.

As expected, Damien flashed from where he was and caught her into his arms right before she hits the floor.

Blair wanted a reason to get close to Damien so she could steal the dagger.

"Are you okay?" Damien asks in a concerned tone.

Looking up, Blair was besieged by the whirlwind of concerned emotions his blue orbs were reflecting.

In that moment, when she should be grabbing the golden dagger from his sheathe, Blair was too captivated by Damien's beauty to think clearly.

For the first time in her life, her heart pounds and not from fear but from a man's touch.

The look in her eyes was too familiar, Damien could swear he knows her somewhere, but he can't place where.

These two lost themselves in each other's gazes, both drowning in their own thoughts.

It was the sound of Cara's scream, "Damien look out!" that snapped them back to reality.

Moving swiftly with Blair still wrapped in his arms, Damien span around, pulling out his dagger with one hand, and using his other hand to protect Blair from falling - he stabbed the vampire in the chest.

Blair watched with anxiety as the vampire's entire body bloated like a balloon and bursts into ash.

If Damien had managed to kill her back then would she become a pile of ash like this vampire? She thought to herself.

He sled the dagger back into his sheathe and carefully puts Blair back on her feet.

After they returned home and everyone headed to their rooms, Damien's smell - a spicy thyme and oakwood - still lingers on Blair. She could not sleep a wink and kept turning and tossing on her bed.

What was that? Why did she hesitate to grab the dagger when she had the chance to? And why was her heart racing from his touch?

A knock interrupts her thoughts, and Cara walks into the room, "You awake?"

Blair sat up and nods, "can't sleep!"

Cara makes her way further into the room and settled on the bed beside her, "it must have been frightening today!"

"And Zion wasn't exactly welcoming. It's been almost a decade and he still finds it hard to trust a new face!" She heaved a heavy sigh.

"Nah, it's nothing. Trauma can change a person!" Blair smiled.

She look up at Cara, "but have you ever wonder why the masked evil witch had to do what she did? Perhaps she was broken too!"

Cara paused to think, "hmm, I don't know what could have warranted her decision to kill everyone on that ship, but one life should not account for a hundreds!"

Blair nods, "perhaps she made the wrong decision! Rage can make a person do bad things!"

Cara chuckle weakly, "I don't care why she did what she did, but I lost my husband, and that's all I care about. And I will never forgive her, in life and in death that masked evil witch will pay!"

Blair nods, "I respect that. I too can never forgive the man who took everything away from me!"

Cara shoots a sidelong glance at Blair, "I know you don't want to go into details about who he is, but I will make you one promise, if he shows his face... I will make sure he pays!"

She place a supportive hand on Blair's lap and gave her a gentle squeeze.

Blair chuckles, "Thank you Cara, you are a good one!"

"Hmm" Cara nodded.

"So if you are a siren, and Zion is a lycan, that also makes Zion's brother who is your husband a lycan too!" Blair speaks aimlessly,

"I mean, it's confusing!"

"Are you trying to ask how did a siren and a werewolf meet, fell in love, and even got married?" Cara teased.

Though she portray a calm expression, Blair could still sense the sorrow building within her.

"Well John and I didn't exactly liked each other at first. I hated his wits and he hated my friendly nature. He used to say mermaids are evil!" She laughs haltingly,

"And then um, we got to know each other and without realizing it, we fell in love!"

She sighed, rubbing her temple and chuckling painfully.

"he was my world!" Cara said, voice trembling,

"And when he died, I lost my will to live. I loved John, I still do, and will always and forever love him!"

She sniffed, wiping away the single tear that rolled down her cheeks with the back of her hand.

"You know funny thing? They say mermaids don't cry because we practically live in water." She laughed,

"And here I am..." She halted and sharply sucks her teeth, "crying and hating myself for letting him go alone."

Blair pats her shoulder, "the guilt we carry for the death of our loved ones is poisonous, it ravages us, and yet... It is our only will to live, to survive in this cruel world!"

"I am so sorry Cara." Blair consoled her.

"I'm sorry too, for whoever it is that you lost!" Cara responded and smiled warmly.

Seconds passed, then minutes, but they remained quiet, each lost in her own dreadful thoughts.

Blair breaks the silence, "So um, why does Damien hunt the supernatural?"

"Not the supernatural, Damien only kills those who are evil!" Cara said.

She continue, "Damien is carrying a burden none of us can imagine how heavy it is, and how much it weighs him down. Damien is a demon and a human. He has a dark side and a good side, I mean everyone does but Damien is faced with a constant battle, a battle he fights against himself!" Cara explained.

"Damien went through a lot, he is the very first of his kind. The demons find him too pure, while the humans find him too dark. He is alone, and belongs nowhere!" She complained.

"Is that why he hunts evil people? to prove to the humans he is worth their love and trust?" Blair questioned.

"I have no idea what cooks in that maze of a mind of his but... I do know one thing, Damien is only wicked to those who are evil." She responded.

"As part of a dark entity himself, Damien can sense darkness and he feels a self proclaimed righteousness to eradicate that darkness, he wants the world to be nothing but purity, and it can never be!" Cara concluded.

She stands, "good night Blair!" With those words, she leave.

Blair falls back on her bed, "What have you done Blair!?"

Cara headed to the balcony, Damien awaits her there - hands leaning against the bannister - gaze staring into the distance.

"So, what do you think?" He asked without shifting his gaze.

"I um, not to jump into conclusions, I don't think Blair is that woman!" Cara said, approaching Damien, and leaning on the bannister besides him.

"Why do you think she is the masked evil witch?" Cara inquired.

"I have met her Cara, and her eyes... I can never forget her eyes!"

He turns to face Cara, "I can never rest until I'm sure Blair is not her!"

"How? Will you strip her naked to see if she has a scar from the stab wound?" Cara protested.

"If that's what I have to, then I must!" He looks determined.

Cara scoffs, "and then what?"

"And if she is that woman, I will have no other choice but to finish what I started!" He responded coldly.

"so you are going to kill her?" She shook her head in disbelief.

Damien nods,

"yes, I'm going to kill her."
