I took a deep breath and lifted my eyes to Caio. I knew it was a risk to come here. After all, I was literally presenting myself to the man who wanted to rightfully convict Lucrezia of the crimes she had committed, which was understandable – if I was really the princess. But of course, I wasn't.

Caio's eyes were cold and unfeeling, and for the first time I realized what other people meant when they said that talking to the archduke was like trying to communicate with a gorgeous ice sculpture – you'll be mesmerized with the beauty, but you really couldn't hope to find any emotion in it. That was how Caio was looking at me, as though whatever I would say didn't have any effect on him, and I flinched. I still needed to try, though. "I have to talk to you, Caio."
