Caio returned to the imperial prison after leaving the impoverished neighborhood. Reading the investigation report was one thing, but finding out for himself the accuracy of it was another. He could almost picture in his mind the series of events that led to 20's poisoning.
The girl was the sole breadwinner of her family, with a sick mother and two younger brothers, and she was desperate enough to do anything in order to make both ends meet. Someone must have taken advantage of her desperation, fabricated a fake background for her, and pulled some strings to get her a job as a scullery maid. There must be someone influential working behind the scenes because the imperial palace was known to impose strict paperwork requirements for all applicants wanting to work there – even those in the lowest rank like maids.
