Chapter 4 - Chapter Four: Blockades and Breakneck Pursuits

Fixing her gaze on the bustling dance floor, Mila took a step forward, only to be accosted by an unsavory and unkempt man. Despite a prominent gap in his teeth, he leered at her, his glare a mix of menace and desire. His unbuttoned and unzipped jean shorts clung to him, sweat dripping from his hair and skin, emanating an unmistakable odor that cut through the thick crowd.

"How 'bout you and me do a little dancing?" he drawled, attempting a dance move that appeared more reminiscent of malfunctioning robots than any form of rhythm.

"I don't think so," Mila shot back, swiftly pivoting to change her direction. Navigating through people leisurely sipping their drinks or patiently waiting their turn at the bar, she believed she had evaded her persistent pursuer. But just as she ventured back towards the dance floor, a sinking feeling washed over her as she noticed him once again in close proximity.

"Just one dance, sugar," he pleaded.

"Stop following me. I'm on my way to the bathroom!" Mila quickly covered, veering away from the dance floor and making her way towards the entrance. The bathrooms were situated to the right, with a long line of men and women patiently waiting for their turn. Mila brushed past the frustrated individuals, paying no heed to their protests, and slipped into the ladies' room.

The bathroom proved to be even more crowded than the bar itself, but Mila silently hugged the wall, hoping a few moments of hiding would deter her persistent nuisance. Pulling out her phone, she wished for a momentary distraction. A single message from Aria blinked on the screen, simply stating, "Help!"

Rolling her eyes at the melodrama, Mila stashed her phone away, deeming it safe to emerge from the bathroom. Pushing open the door and stepping back into the bar's bustling interior, her heart sank as she came face-to-face with the persistent hick yokel, planted firmly in her path.

"Leave me alone!" Mila hollered, her voice cutting through the clamor, but her words only seemed to further enrage her pursuer.

"Why you gotta be such a bitch!" he spat venomously, reaching out to grab her arm.

"No one calls me that!" Mila growled, her determination flaring. With toes curling inside her slippers, she delivered a swift kick to his shin, causing an agonizing flicker of pain to cross his face. It was her moment to strike. Mila shoved him forcefully back into the queue of men waiting beside the bathroom, triggering an explosive eruption of shouts and a cascade of clenched fists. The area quickly descended into chaos as onlookers joined the brawl, drawn like moths to a flame. Seizing the opportunity, Mila slipped away, swiftly making her way back to the bar and the now seemingly expansive dance floor.

"Where's the bouncer!" one of the bartenders bellowed, abandoning his post and unwittingly allowing a few inebriated individuals to pilfer bottles from behind the counter. While the temptation to partake in a bit of alcohol thievery tugged at Mila's rebellious side, she had a more pressing mission at hand. Her encounter with the sleazebag had only fueled her determination.

Finally reaching the pulsating dance floor, Mila brimmed with renewed hope as she scanned the crowd for a glimpse of Liam. This entire ordeal had dragged on for far too long, and she was desperate to put it all behind her. Skillfully weaving through dancers, she cast frantic glances in every direction, desperately trying to maintain an air of nonchalance, as though she wasn't there with a single-minded purpose.

The bass reverberated in her ears, pulsating against her chest. The rhythm of the song was both seductive and fast-paced, stirring her desires. Handsome faces surrounded her, but it was only one that held the power to make her heart flutter.

And then, there he was. Liam, engulfed by the writhing mass of bodies, locked in a dance with a beach-blonde vixen who seemed to have just washed out of the beach. Yet, their movements transcended mere dancing, edging closer to a provocative display of dry-humping. The girl pressed her backside against Liam's crotch, their bodies grinding together like passengers in a raucous elevator. A broad smile adorned Liam's face, a sight Mila had never witnessed before—so much happiness.

A sickening wave washed over Mila, sapping her energy and leaving her feeling as if she had been struck in the gut. Her mouth turned dry, and a dizzying lightheadedness clouded her senses. Closing her eyes, she sought a bit of relief to collect her thoughts. She had to do something, but the jostling crowd around her only served to disorient her thinking. At the very least, she could tell that Liam remained oblivious to her presence.

Summoning her courage, Mila circled around the gyrating couple, her foot poised for action. With a swift motion, she aimed a well-aimed kick at the girl's backside, right before the two could collide once more. The girl stumbled forward, careening into another couple and crashing to the floor.

Liam turned his head, his shocked expression morphing into a pale look. "What, what, what are you doing?" he stammered, struggling to comprehend the situation unfolding before him.

"We have to talk!" Mila shouted, reaching for his forearm. Yet, Liam recoiled, avoiding her touch and creating distance between them.

"We're through, Mila! There's nothing more to talk about!"

"No, wait!" she pleaded, but Liam had already melted into the crowd. She couldn't allow him to slip away without hearing her out. Determination coursing through her veins, Mila pursued him, her footsteps echoing Aria, who stood waiting, an expression of confusion etched across her face. The bouncer was nowhere to be found.

"He just cried and told me to hold him," Aria relayed, her voice filled with bewilderment.

"Did you see Liam? We've got to hurry!" Mila exclaimed, racing past her. Aria, being the faster runner, quickly caught up, the two of them halting abruptly as Liam's Porsche pulled out of the parking lot and merged onto the street, an angry grimace etched onto his face, further fueling Mila's determination.

"I'm not letting him get away!" she declared, sprinting past Aria. They both came to a sudden stop, frozen in place as Liam's car paused at a red light. Mila's eyes remained fixed on the gleaming silver vehicle as she resumed her run. Aria scrambled to climb into the station wagon as Mila rounded to the driver's side, flinging herself inside and jamming the key into the ignition.

"Come on, you piece of shit!" she howled, her voice laced with frustration. The engine sputtered, hesitated, and then roared to life. "Thank God!"

The light changed, granting Liam and his Porsche a head start. Mila pulled out of the parking lot, heedless of other vehicles. Her foot pressed firmly on the gas pedal, yet she struggled to keep pace. They veered away from the bustling bars, venturing into a section of town devoid of life at such late hours. As Liam sped towards a yellow light, Mila gritted her teeth, her foot remaining firmly planted. She sailed through the red light, paying no heed to the blaring horns and disapproving gazes. She couldn't afford to let him escape.

The streetlights aligned in her favor. Liam's Porsche veered towards a red light but, instead of stopping, he abruptly turned into a McDonald's parking lot. Mila's eyes widened, and she took a quivering breath. This was her chance. Jerking the car to the side of the road, she leaned over and flung open the passenger side door, forcefully pushing Aria out.

"I think I saw a slave trade field!"

"That's really degrading!" Aria yelled, caught off guard by the sudden push out of the car. Yet, Mila had already sped away, the passenger side door hanging open.

Darting into the McDonald's drive-thru, she brazenly entered through the exit, following the thin road that curved around the building, leading to an empty parking lot at the rear. Just as Liam maneuvered his vehicle to turn around, Mila's truck appeared, causing both cars to screech to a halt, mere inches apart. She had successfully blocked his escape.
