The next morning, Mrs. Edgar woke up to find herself alone in the hospital room. She glanced at the clock on the wall, realizing that it was already late. She wondered where her kids were and if they were okay.
Just as she was about to press the call button to summon a nurse, the door opened, and Raymond and Raynell rushed in. They both had worried expressions on their faces.
"Mom, we're here," Raymond said, his voice filled with concern. "We're sorry we left you alone. We didn't want to, but the nurse insisted that we wait outside."
Mrs. Edgar smiled weakly at her children. "It's alright, my darlings. I understand." She gestured for them to come closer, and they sat on the edge of her bed.
"Mom, the doctor said they're going to do another test today. Are you scared?" Raynell asked, her eyes welling up with tears.
Mrs. Edgar reached out to wipe away her daughter's tears. "No, my sweet Raynell. Mommy isn't scared. I want to get better and be strong for both of you."
Raymond interjected, his voice filled with determination. "And we're going to be strong for you too, Mom. We'll always be here for you, no matter what."
Mrs. Edgar felt a surge of love and pride for her children. Despite the difficult circumstances they were facing, they remained resilient and supportive. She hugged them tightly, cherishing the warmth and comfort they provided.
Just then, the door opened, and Dr. Bernie entered the room with a gentle smile on his face. "Good morning, Mrs. Edgar. How are you feeling today?"
"I'm feeling a little better, thank you," Mrs. Edgar replied, grateful for the doctor's presence.
Dr. Bernie approached the bed and examined Mrs. Edgar. After a thorough check-up, he said, "Your progress is quite remarkable. I'm pleased to see that you're recovering well."
Mrs. Edgar smiled gratefully. "Thank you, Doctor Bernie. I'm really grateful for all that you've done for me."
The doctor nodded and then looked at the twins. "Raymond, Raynell, could you please step outside for a moment? I need to speak with your mother privately."
The twins exchanged concerned glances but complied, reluctantly leaving the room. Mrs. Edgar's heart skipped a beat, wondering what the doctor had to say.
Once they were alone, Dr. Bernie pulled up a chair and sat beside Mrs. Edgar. He spoke gently, "Mrs. Edgar, there's something important I need to discuss with you. It's about your husband."
Mrs. Edgar's eyes widened, and a mixture of fear and curiosity gripped her. "What about him, Doctor?"
Dr. Bernie took a deep breath before continuing. "I did some research last night after our conversation, and I believe I may have some information that could help you. But first, I need to ask you a few questions."
Mrs. Edgar nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "Please, go ahead."
"Are you aware of your husband's involvement in any illegal activities or connections to dangerous individuals?" the doctor asked, his tone serious.
Mrs. Edgar's brows furrowed in confusion. "No, Doctor Bernie. As far as I know, Edgar has always been a loving husband and father. I can't imagine him being involved in anything illegal."
The doctor sighed. "I had my suspicions, and I dug deeper. It appears that your husband, Edgar Linton, has been leading a double life—a life involved with some dangerous people. These people may have been responsible for the harm inflicted upon you."
Mrs. Edgar gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in shock. "No, that can't be true. Edgar would never do something like that."
Dr. Bernie leaned closer, his expression filled with empathy. "I understand this is difficult to accept, but I have evidence to support my claims. If we involve the authorities, we might be able to protect you and your children."
Tears welled up in Mrs. Edgar's eyes as the weight of the situation sank in. "I... I don't know what to do, Doctor. I'm scared for my children and myself."
Dr. Bernie reached out and gently held her hand. "You don't have to make any decisions right now. Take your time to process everything. Just remember, you're not alone in this. We will do everything we can to ensure your safety."
Mrs. Edgar nodded, feeling a mix of emotions—fear, uncertainty, and a glimmer of hope. She knew that a difficult journey lay ahead, but with her children by her side and the support of Dr. Bernie, she was determined to face whatever came her way.
