Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Last of their kind

After navigating through the expansive labyrinth of the Archive's first three floors, Caden found himself surrounded by a symphony of alien machines humming softly in the dark. He moved with caution and curiosity, taking in the rich textures of the alien technology. Each piece he encountered, be it a softly glowing polyhedral node or a hovering spherical device, was carefully catalogued and placed in his internal storage, preserving them for further study back home.

He spoke aloud to his voice log, recording his impressions, "Third floor. Found multiple technological artifacts of unknown purpose. Devices are geometric in form, display light and sound patterns, possible data storage or calculation devices. Stored for analysis."

As he continued exploring, he encountered an eerie sight that halted his footsteps. Before him lay the remains of an alien entity in a strange suit. Caden narrated the moment in hushed tones into the voice log, "Found a skeletal entity, bipedal, appears humanoid. Wearing a suit that seems environmental, possibly protective. The design is intricate, unknown materials... luminescent."

His hands gingerly reached out for the strange objects by the skeleton's side - a compact ranged weapon and a melee weapon of alien design. His voice was tinged with awe and trepidation as he spoke into the recorder, "Located weapons, one ranged, one melee. The ranged device... ergonomic, compact, etched with unknown symbols. Melee weapon seems a fusion of sword and staff, pulsing rhythmically. Materials and energy source, unknown. Both artifacts stored for further study."

The encounter with the remains of an alien explorer, likely a seeker of knowledge just like himself, lent a solemn note to his adventure. The thrill of discovery was now tempered with a sense of shared destiny that connected explorers across time and species. But there was no time to linger on sentiment. The clock was ticking, and Caden resumed his exploration, ready to delve deeper into the secrets of this alien Archive.

As he journeyed deeper into the labyrinthine Archive, a sight gave him pause. Arrayed before a massive, imposing door were more skeletal forms, lying as if they had fallen in battle. It appeared as though they had given their lives protecting what lay beyond the door.

"I've found more entities, positioned before a massive door. They seem to have died defending it, which suggests something of great importance behind. I will... umm... recover one of the specimens for study. I understand this might be seen as intrusive, but the potential knowledge it could provide is immense," Caden narrated into his voice log, a note of hesitance creeping into his voice.

He carefully placed one of the alien bodies into his internal storage, acknowledging the sacrifice these beings made and promising to himself that their story would be told.

Moving closer to the door, he realized it was made of a material unfamiliar to him, standing strong and unyielding. The dense door resisted his efforts to force it open, rebuffing his initial attempts to gain entry. His voice log echoed the effort, "Attempted to open the door. It seems resistant to physical force. The door appears to be made of a foreign material, densely packed, unyielding."

Caden's curious eyes scanned the area around the door, noting the intricate patterns and symbols that lined its frame. Hoping for a hidden access point or a failsafe of some sort, he meticulously examined every inch of the surface. "Investigating the door further," he recorded in his voice log. "It's covered in the same symbols we've been seeing throughout the Archive. There might be a hidden access point or some kind of failsafe."

His investigation continued, each tick of the clock on his wrist a stark reminder of the fleeting time. The secrets of the alien Archive lay before him, and he was determined to unearth them.

As Caden continued his search, his fingers traced along the inscriptions, a haptic feedback within his exosuit providing him the feel of the indents and textures. He noticed a pattern in the alien script that seemed to correspond with the design of the door. The detail was minute, but it caught his attention, a circular pattern, slightly raised above the rest. "Noticing a repetitive pattern in the inscription that seems to align with the door's design. Possibly a kind of lock or control mechanism? Still investigating," he muttered into his voice log, the excitement clear in his voice.

He placed his gauntleted hand on the pattern. For a moment, nothing happened. But then, the pattern started to glow, the ambient light from the building illuminating it. The glow spread outward from his touch, following the circular pattern until it encompassed the entire door. Then, with a low hum and a grinding noise, the door started to move. "The door... it's opening!" Caden exclaimed into his voice log, a thrill of anticipation coursing through him.

As the door slid open, it revealed a chamber, the walls of which were lined with an array of foreign-looking devices and objects, their purpose unknown. The room was bathed in a soft, ambient light that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere, casting long shadows that danced with each movement. Large data banks, intricate tools, objects that seemed cultural or ceremonial, all preserved, untouched for eons.

"Inside the chamber now. It's filled with alien devices, possibly of scientific or cultural importance. The preservation of these artifacts is remarkable. I'll be collecting samples. This could potentially transform our understanding of this civilization, their science, their culture," Caden spoke into his log, his voice heavy with awe.

Carefully, one by one, he began to place the alien artifacts into his internal storage, ensuring each object was securely stowed. Time slipped away unnoticed as he delved deeper into the hidden treasures of the alien archive.

The room shimmered into a deeper life around Caden as his datapad made a successful connection. The connection point sparked with a faint energy and data streamed onto his pad, lines of alien script flickering across the screen only to be instantly translated. "Data link established, download initiated," Caden noted with a sense of triumph in his voice log.

As the datapad began to pull the information from the archive, the room started to react. Layers of ancient dust that had settled on the alien technology over the eons began to swirl around in a vortex of activity. A low hum resonated from the floor beneath him, increasing in intensity, the vibrations causing the dust to swirl around more fervently.

Suddenly, the floor started to shift, revealing a deep chasm from which a thick fog started to roll out. The cool mist danced around his legs, casting an ethereal glow around the chamber. "Anomalies occurring. Floor giving way. Unidentified fog rising," Caden logged, keeping his tone steady despite the uncertainty.

As the fog began to fill the chamber, his HUD flickered with alerts. A new update from the xenolinguistic module popped up on the corner of his visor, indicating a breakthrough. "Translation algorithm completed. Starting real-time translation," the HUD displayed.

As Caden swung his gaze around the room, symbols previously indecipherable began making sense. "Secured Vault," "Archives," "Science Lab," "Sacred Hall," words emerged from the symbols around the area. "The translations are coming in. I can read their language," Caden exclaimed into his voice log, his voice echoing a touch of disbelief. His eyes darted around the room, drinking in the translated information as he stood on the precipice of a grand revelation.

With a sense of foreboding anticipation, Caden descended the spiral staircase. His footsteps echoed ominously in the hollow expanse as his visor translated the symbol-laden suit of one of the fallen. "Prismatic Guardians," the translation popped up on his HUD, indicating the faction name. The second suit was markedly different, the translated text read "Galactic Enclave."

The two factions appeared to have been in conflict, their bodies strewn across the chamber, some still clutching strange weapons. "It seems there was a war, or at least a battle, down here between the Prismatic Guardians and the Galactic Enclave," Caden logged, his voice echoing in the chilled chamber.

Moving deeper into the cryolab, the light began to flicker on, casting an eerie glow across the cold steel floor. Broken tubes, shattered glass, and wires protruded haphazardly from the walls and floor. Amongst the scattered debris and bones, a tube stood unscathed, frosted over with a thick layer of ice.

Curiosity piqued, Caden approached it, wiping away the frost to reveal a figure within. "There's someone inside," he voiced into the log, his voice heavy with astonishment.

Inside was a female of the alien species, her skin was a dusky tan color with ethereal bioluminescent markings tracing intricate patterns around her body. She looked young, perhaps equivalent to an 18-year-old in human terms, but the most astonishing discovery was the faint pulsing glow at her chest, the unmistakable energy of a stellar core. "She has a stellar core! She might be one of them... the ancient star wielders," Caden spoke, barely a whisper in his voice log, stunned by the discovery.

A myriad of thoughts swirled in Caden's mind, the potential of reviving her, the knowledge she might possess. The prospect of being able to interact with a living being from this lost civilization was a chance he couldn't pass up. His gaze shifted, scanning the chamber for a control panel or a switch that might release her from her icy imprisonment.

The chamber was a maze of broken machinery and tangled wires, but Caden's keen eyes spotted a panel that seemed relatively intact. Cautaneously, he approached the control panel, his fingers hovering over the cold, alien buttons. The text that popped up in his HUD was a labyrinth of options and submenus in the alien language, now translated thanks to the earlier work of his datapad. The term "Cryo Release" caught his eye.

"This could be it," he murmured into the voice log, his voice tight with anticipation. "Initiating cryo release sequence."

With a press of the button, the panel buzzed to life. A low hum echoed through the chamber as machinery long dormant whirred back into motion. Ice crystals around the tube began to hiss and vaporize, mist swirling around the base of the tube, obscuring the floor.

Inside, the figure of the young alien female remained still, her face tranquil, as if in deep slumber. Slowly, the frosted surface of the tube became clear, unveiling her in greater detail. The bioluminescent markings on her body glowed faintly through the thin layer of her suit, pulsating in rhythm with the soft glow of the stellar core.

"Initiation successful," Caden breathed into the voice log, his words choked with a mixture of awe and anticipation. "The cryo release process has begun. If everything goes according to plan, we might be meeting a living being from this ancient civilization."

His heart pounded in his chest as he waited, watching the mist gradually disperse and the glow from the stellar core becoming brighter with every passing moment. His eyes were locked on the figure in the tube, brimming with anticipation for the first stirrings of life from the girl inside. The countdown to the warp back ticked on his wrist, but at this moment, his full focus was on the unfolding spectacle before him.

Caden held his breath as he watched the various screens and gauges on the control panel. His HUD translated the alien language, and readings of her vital signs started populating on the panel. Heart rate, oxygen levels, body temperature - everything was gradually coming to life. He felt his heart rate mirroring the one displayed on the panel, racing in sync with the slowly increasing numbers.

His gaze returned to the girl in the tube. The artificial illumination of the chamber softly highlighted her features. Her pointed ears, reminiscent of the fantasy elves he had read about in his childhood, gave her an ethereal, otherworldly aura. Her body was slim and toned, indicative of a warrior or perhaps an adventurer like him. The bioluminescent markings on her body were now shining a little brighter, casting an enchanting, azure glow around her. He could see her chest rising and falling rhythmically now, each breath bringing more life to her being.

The stellar core in her chest had dimmed down to a soft pulsating glow, indicating that it had calmed down. It was clear that she was still deep in slumber, not yet ready to awaken to this brave new world. His eyes shifted back to her peaceful face, his heart filled with wonder at the extraordinary events he was witnessing. The thrill of the exploration, the adrenaline of discovery, and the surreal experience of watching a member of an ancient alien civilization coming back to life was overwhelming.

"This is unbelievable," he breathed into the voice log, the sheer wonder of the moment seeping into his voice. "She's alive, her vitals are stable, and she's breathing on her own. I'll be monitoring her status closely."

Every tick of the countdown on his wrist felt like an echo, reverberating through the silence of the cryo chamber, the tension building with each passing moment. The girl inside the tube was still in deep slumber, but Caden was wide awake, his senses heightened, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts, expectations, and an inexplicable connection to the life he was about to bring back from the brink of oblivion.

His eyes shifted to the countdown on his wrist. Eight hours had already passed since he had arrived, and he hadn't even noticed. The remaining time was ticking away steadily, a stark reminder of the urgency of his situation. But his attention was soon drawn back to the girl as he noticed her starting to stir.

As the girl's movements grew more pronounced, Caden realized he needed to communicate with her in a way she would understand. He quickly navigated through his HUD to the xenolinguistics module and set it to convert his words into the alien language.

Taking a deep breath, he began to write on his data pad, his hand guided by the module's translations: "I mean no harm. I found you in the cryotube and managed to release you. There was a massive battle here, your tube was the only one I found intact."

He held up the data pad towards the tube, hoping she would see his message when she woke up. The thought of meeting a member of an ancient civilization filled him with anticipation. He sat down on a piece of debris, his eyes fixed on the girl, ready to meet the unknown.

As the girl's eyelids fluttered open, her eyes, a captivating shade of bioluminescent cyan, widened in immediate panic. Her breath hitched, and her gaze darted wildly around the unfamiliar environment. She struggled against the restraints, tugging at the tubes that tethered her to the cryotube.

In a moment of self-awareness, she delicately reached for the tubes inserted in her mouth, her hands trembling. Her gaze then fell upon the datapad that Caden had left at the edge of the cryotube. Her frantic movements stilled as she read his message, a flicker of understanding sparking in her eyes.

Her fingers, long and delicate with a soft glow, reached out for the datapad. She hesitated for a moment before pressing her fingers onto the screen, slowly typing in her language. The words translated on Caden's HUD: "Let me out."

Caden noticed a slight hesitation in her movements, a visible caution underlying her demand. Her survival instincts were still high, yet it seemed she was willing to trust, at least for now. It was a beginning.

After the door of the cryotube hissed open, Caden quickly typed out another message: "What is your name?" The girl, still shaky from her extended cryosleep, glanced at the datapad and, after a moment, typed out a single word: "Elara".
