"Okay, so what did we learn from the incident at the fountain?" Kyle asked. He was wearing a rut in the guestroom carpet, pacing as he often did when there was serious thinking to do, and he had lots of thoughts at the moment.
It was a rhetorical question. He wasn't actually expecting a reply. Just a lead-in to give his own answer.
"Don't be impulsive! Don't push the envelope! Don't try to rush things with Andrea! Fewer surprises!" He counted off on his fingers. "She took the whole thing in good humor, but it was a risky move. Could have been a major setback. Could have irreparably damaged the relationship."
He stopped and turned toward the bed, dropping his arms to his side.
"So what the heck happened tonight? Because it's like I didn't learn from my mistakes at all! I was impulsive. Definitely pushed the envelope… Andrea was certainly surprised! By all rights, it should have been a colossal disaster!"
