Simon stood between Andrea and the door to the third floor. The stairwell wasn't wide, but easily wide enough for two people to walk past each other without difficulty.
…Unless one of those people stood with his arms spread, holding both handrails and making it clear that he didn't intend to move.
It would be easy enough to turn around, go back to the second floor and find another way up. There was a good chance Simon would try to follow her, but then at least whatever this was would happen somewhere public.
