Chapter 2 - Prologue

ARIA'S heart raced as she sprinted through the dimly lit corridors of the abandoned hospital. The sound of distant screams and the scent of death hung heavy in the air, reminding her of the relentless epidemic that had turned the world into a wasteland. The flickering fluorescent lights barely illuminated her path, casting eerie shadows that danced menacingly along the walls. Her mind raced, her thoughts consumed by the urgency of her mission. She clutched a small vial tightly in her hand, a precious sample that held the key to unraveling the mysteries of the infected. With every passing second, she felt the weight of the world on her shoulders, knowing that time was running out for humanity.

As she approached the entrance to the makeshift laboratory, the sound of shuffling footsteps echoed through the corridor behind her. Aria's heart skipped a beat. They were close. The infected were relentless in their pursuit. She had seen it firsthand, witnessed the darkness that had consumed those she once knew.

With a surge of adrenaline, Aria burst into the laboratory. The room was a chaotic mess of overturned equipment, shattered glass, and flickering monitors.

"They're getting closer, Ri," Ethan, her most trusted colleague, said with urgency. "We need to proceed with the experiment. It's our only chance."

Aria nodded, her focus unwavering. She swiftly moved to the center of the room, a sterile table prepared for the delicate procedure. The vial she held contained a serum she had developed, a potential antidote to the infection that ravaged the minds and bodies of the afflicted.

As the sound of approaching footsteps grew louder, Aria prepared herself. She rolled up her sleeves, revealing scars etched into her skin. Ethan prepared the equipment, his hands steady despite the chaos that surrounded them. He met Aria's gaze, and they shared a silent understanding.

There was no turning back now.

The laboratory door swung open, and the infected poured into the room like a relentless wave. Their twisted forms lunged toward Aria and Ethan, their bloodshot eyes filled with hunger. Aria clenched her jaw, her resolve unwavering. She braced herself for the fight that was about to unfold.

Bang! Screams and muddled voices filled the air.

As the infected lunged towards them, Aria's instincts kicked in. With a swift motion, she reached for a nearby tray, grabbing a scalpel and swiftly parried the first attacker's lunge. Her years of medical training had honed her reflexes and precision, turning her into a formidable combatant in this new world. Ethan fought alongside her, using a makeshift weapon fashioned from a broken chair leg. With each strike, they aimed for the vulnerable spots on the infected, aiming to incapacitate rather than kill. There was still hope for these tormented souls.

In the middle of the intense battle, Aria noticed something peculiar. One of the infected, a young woman with matted hair and bloodshot eyes, seemed to hesitate for a moment before attacking. There was a flicker of recognition in her gaze. Aria's heart skipped a beat.

Aria seized the opportunity. With a swift move, she incapacitated the infected woman and managed to inject a small dose of the serum into her bloodstream. It was a risky move to do the experiment within this chaos, but they were desperate.

They had no other choice.

Aria waited for the serum to course through the woman's veins. A few moments later, the frenzied hunger in her eyes subsided, replaced by a glimmer of awareness. Aria watched in awe as the woman's features softened, as if a veil of darkness had momentarily lifted, allowing her former self to emerge.

Ethan's eyes widened in astonishment. "Ri, it's working!"

Aria nodded, her voice filled with a mix of hope and determination. "We have to save as much as we can. We need to continue the experiments and refine the procedure. There's still a chance to bring them back."

They fought their way through the infected, seizing every opportunity to administer the serum to those who showed even the slightest sign of recognition. The tide of battle began to shift as the infected transformed into their former selves, fighting alongside Aria and Ethan against their own kind.

With every successful injection, Aria's resolve grew stronger. She knew she had stumbled upon a breakthrough, but there was still much work to be done. The infected, though momentarily restored, were fragile, their newfound awareness of a delicate balance on the precipice of insanity. She wasn't sure if they'd start losing their sanity again.

As the last of the infected fell, Aria stood amidst the wreckage of the laboratory, her body covered in sweat and blood.

"We can't stop here," she said. "We have to push forward. We have to save them all."

Ethan nodded, a mix of admiration and concern in his gaze. "We will, Ri. We'll find a way. But it's enough that we knew we made a breakthrough for now. It's turning dark. Let's take it one step at a time, okay?"

Aria looked at him and smiled, "Okay. Let's go home, brother."

Ethan chuckled and flicked her forehead "Who wants to be your brother?"

Aria touched her forehead, glared at him, and snorted. "Alright, Ethan. Let's go."

Aria paused, as if remembering something important. "Ethan, how are we going to bring these people back? My brother would skin me alive!" the guy just chuckled.

"Don't worry. He wouldn't dare to," he said in a gentle reassuring voice. "Let's go."

"Alright."
