Chapter 4 - Divergence (2)

Callahan's POV

It was supposed to be the happiest day of his life until that idiot stole again.

He was supposed to be on leave, going home to his wife and his baby, but no! A thief who doesn't have a clue about any repercussions had stolen THE. FUCKING. CROWN.

And now he was lying on the ground with a headache.

He would've gone to the hospital, squeezing her weak hand and telling her "I'm here, it's going to be alright," as she pushed the baby out. He could've held his daughter on his arm, cradle her against his chest, and told her, "Daddy's here, I love you, sweetie."

Instead, he was lying on the ground with a headache and wondering what the hell just happened. He felt like he had talked with an old man, like a dream or something. But the only thing he remembers is the faint long beard of the man. For some reason, he was aware this was not his world but rather another world, a magical world.

He doesn't know how he came to that understanding but he was sure of that fact.

He lay on the ground, feeling the grass beneath him and gazing at the blue sky. He felt calm and relaxed. He felt like he was in heaven.

He sighed, a smile spreading on his face. This was heaven.

The warm sun shone down on him and he closed his eyes, enjoying the moment. A single drop of tear rolled down from his eye, slowly rolling to his ear.

"I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice barely audible amidst the gentle breeze. "I'm so sorry." The words were a plea, an acknowledgment of the pain he had caused and the irreversible consequences he now faced.

At that moment, a surge of anger coursed through him, overwhelming his senses. He screamed into the open air, his voice echoing through the valley. "You bastard!" The words held both accusation and frustration, directed at himself for allowing the thief to slip through his grasp.

He knew his wife would never forgive him. His daughter would never know him. He had failed them all. He had failed everyone. He mourned for his lost chance. He mourned for his lost family.

He wanted to cry, to let all his emotions out but he couldn't. He felt a lump in his throat. He felt nothing. He took a deep breath, calming himself down.

"I will find a way back home," he declared, his voice filled with a newfound determination. "Somehow, some way, I will make it back to them."

He lay there for some more time, collecting himself. He didn't have any rest for the last couple of months. The due date of his wife coming closer and the related problems, the doctors, the hospital fees, the insurance issues, the stress, the anxiety, the pressure, and the uncertainty. It was all too much.

He closed his eyes, hoping to get some rest before finding a way out of this world.

But then, he heard footsteps nearing him, like the sound of a parade party.

His eyes shot open and he lifted his head to look at the source of the noise. There, a small group of kids were running. He smiled at the sight. They were running towards him with clubs and sticks and spears. Their only dress was the leather around their waist and they were screaming. But the crazy thing was not their ugly faces or the long pointy and beefy ears, it was their green color. Their whole body was green.

Callahan's smile quickly faded and was replaced with fear as he realized it was no bloody damn kids, it was gorydamn Goblins! His jaws wide opened at the sight of creatures he only had seen in books and movies. "What the hell?!!"

He scrambled to his feet and quickly searched for his gun, and with a dreadful realization he found out the thief indeed had stolen his handgun too.

"Aww, shit!" There was no time to think as he quickly assumed a fighting pose, two hands fisted in front of him, ready to strike down any ugly green dwarves.

"Kill!" They shouted as they ran towards him.

Callahan cursed again and began to run away from them, his eyes looking for a way out. He took a quick glance over his shoulder and saw the goblins were in hot pursuit.

This was not his fight and he doesn't want anything to do with these creatures.

He heard their shouting and cursing, then they hurled their weapons towards him. Spears and clubs landed beside him, missing him with just a hair width. "Shit! Shit! Shit! What a shitty day to wake up!"

"KILL!" One of the goblins shouted, its spear piercing the ground near Callahan.

"FUCK OFF!" Callahan shouted back as he continued to run away from them.

He was surprised to find that he was faster than them. His mind relaxed and his lips curled upwards, knowing he was going to escape from them.

But the shitty days for Officer Callahan were not over at all and he realized that when a bola, a rope with rocks tied at the ends, tethered onto his legs and he tripped and fell down.

"Arghh!" He rolled on the ground, trying to stop himself from falling face-first. The sudden impact sent a sharp pain through his spine, but he knew he had to ignore the pain if he wanted to survive.

He looked back at the goblins, who were grinning with their razor-sharp teeth. Their faces were greenish-brown with yellow eyes and their skin was wrinkly and saggy. "Damn you ugly green fuckers!"

One of the large and ugliest Goblin came near him and smacked his lips, pointing his club at him, "Tasty human!"

And they were on top of him, dropping their weapons and climbing on top of him and punching him anywhere they can get their hands on.

The day that was supposed to be the very best day of his life turned out to be the worst nightmare of Officer Callahan.
