As the group started gathering materials, the camp began to buzz with activity. Conversations flowed as the crew and insurgents shared tales over the work at hand. They divided into smaller groups, each assigned specific tasks to avoid suspicion.
In a secluded corner, Hffyl, Liv, and a few others were sifting through a pile of circuitry. Hffyl's face held a perpetual scowl whenever he glanced Liv's way, his hostility barely masked.
Liv, attempting to break the tension, commented, "These circuits seem outdated. We might need to rewire them."
Hffyl grunted, "As long as they work."
Another member of their group, an older man with a thick beard, laughed, "Aye, chill out. We're all in the same boat, no?"
Liv chuckled, "Seems like it. Besides, I thought we were on the same team?"
Hffyl grumbled something in Malay, causing the older man to laugh again. "Young blood, always so hot-headed."
As they continued working, Azura approached with a box of materials. "Got some fuel here," she mentioned, offhandedly. "Also, ran into an old contact who said there might be more explosives in the north side of town."
Karim, overhearing, exclaimed, "Perfect! We'll need a small team to go retrieve it."
Omar volunteered, "I'll go. Know the area well."
Captain Ajwad interjected, "Take someone from our crew too. We know how to blend in different scenarios."
Liv, eager to prove her worth, offered, "I could help. Know a thing or two about explosives."
Hffyl remarked, "Let's hope it's not to blow us up."
She shot him a pointed look. "Give it a rest, will you?"
Azura, sensing the mounting tension, intervened, "Alright, let's focus. We don't have time to squabble. We got a job to do."
As the day wore on, the groups slowly made headway, gathering essentials and fortifying their plans. The combined determination of the MV Sirena crew and the insurgents was palpable, driving them towards their shared goal.
Gathering materials in the camp's vicinity was no small task. With the rising sun already casting a warm orange hue, groups scattered about, looking for supplies. Liv, now out of confinement, was paired with Hffyl, much to his chagrin. But they had a task ahead, and personal feelings needed to be put aside.
Hffyl, wielding a worn-out checklist, muttered, "Wire, copper, some batteries... We need more than this."
Liv, eyeing a stack of old electronics nearby, remarked, "We could salvage from these. There's bound to be something useful."
He grunted in response, clearly not thrilled about working closely with her. "Just hurry up, alright?"
Liv rolled her eyes and began her hunt, her fingers expertly skimming over circuits and components. As she worked, she attempted to engage Hffyl, "So, why all the hate? I've worked with many people, but none as welcoming as you."
Hffyl shot her a sharp look, "Just because you're helping now doesn't change your intentions. Your lot always takes and never gives."
She sighed, "We're not all the same, you know. Just as you're not like everyone else from your place."
Dollah, overhearing, chuckled, "Aiyaa, let the poor girl work, lah. She's trying, right?"
Hamzah, who had been quietly disassembling an old radio set nearby, added, "True. We're all here for the same purpose, aren't we?"
Hffyl mumbled something under his breath, but he didn't challenge her further.
By midday, the group had managed to secure a significant amount of materials. Liv and Hffyl, despite their differences, made a good team in terms of efficiency.
As they returned to the camp, Captain Ajwad noticed their laden bags and raised an eyebrow, "Looks like you two managed well."
Hffyl shrugged, "Got what we needed."
Liv added with a smirk, "Despite the delightful company."
The conversation between Liv and Hffyl was suddenly interrupted by a sharp whizzing sound, followed by the ground nearby erupting in dust and debris.
"Sniper!" Dollah yelled, ducking behind a mound.
Everyone scrambled for cover. Faiz and Hamzah quickly dragged some of the heavier equipment, using them as impromptu shields.
Liv, despite being well-trained, found herself impressed by the insurgents' swift reactions. They moved with precision and order, much unlike the ragtag rebels she had imagined them to be.
"Where are they shooting from?" Rizal asked, squinting to get a view while keeping his head low.
Kadir whispered, "Can't tell. But they're good."
Liv nodded, "They're AASOC. Of course they're good."
A sudden burst of automatic fire caused everyone to hunker down even more. Hamzah, having served previously, directed, "Fire in short controlled bursts. Conserve ammo!"
"Anyone got eyes on them?" Captain Ajwad inquired, his voice echoing the tension everyone felt.
Karim, risking a peek from behind a barrel, pulled back swiftly as another bullet impacted dangerously close, "They're using the sun. Clever."
Hffyl, still showing a bit of hostility, but more focused on the situation, turned to Liv, "Any ideas, expert?"
Liv took a deep breath, trying to analyze the situation, "They're drawing our attention. I'd bet they have another group flanking."
Aini, crouched nearby, added, "She's right. Classic diversion."
Nadia, from her vantage point, suddenly called out, "Movement on the west side!"
Utilizing the brief moment of respite, Captain Ajwad devised a plan, "We need a diversion of our own."
Mikhail, ever the quiet thinker, suggested, "We have a few smoke grenades. Could help."
Priya piped in, "While they're blinded, we can reposition."
Embracing the plan, Mei Ling and Dollah moved to the edge of their cover, readying to throw the smoke grenades on Ajwad's signal.
The air grew thick with tension as everyone awaited the Captain's command. With a swift nod, the grenades were launched, spewing a dense smoky curtain between the attackers and the group.
Using the momentary blindness to their advantage, they quickly changed positions, taking more strategic covers and preparing for the impending assault.
Liv, caught up in the well-executed maneuver, whispered to Hffyl, "You guys... you're not what I expected."
He grunted, "We're full of surprises."
As the smokescreen began to dissipate, the deafening roar of an approaching vehicle filled the air. An armored vehicle with mounted weaponry, most likely belonging to AASOC, began advancing toward the camp.
"RPG!" Farid yelled.
One of the insurgents swiftly readied a makeshift, hand-crafted rocket-propelled grenade launcher. With a deep breath, he aimed and released, the projectile roaring towards the armored vehicle. An explosion rang out, but the vehicle, though damaged, kept moving forward.
"They're pushing forward with more firepower!" Faiz exclaimed, glancing at Asif and Karim, "We need something big, and we need it now."
Karim hurriedly whispered to Asif, pulling out a blueprint from his bag, revealing a self-crafted explosive device, "Can we make this in time?"
Asif nodded, determination in his eyes, "If we pool our resources. Zul, I need a detonator. Faiz, anything to amplify the blast?"
Zul, without missing a beat, began assembling a makeshift electronic switch, while Faiz started combining several chemicals to create a potent explosive mixture.
Kadir, seeing the urgency, began setting up a makeshift network with the help of Mei Ling. The plan: disrupt the AASOC's communication channels, even if just momentarily.
"Give me a few minutes," Kadir murmured, fingers flying over his laptop.
The sound of gunfire intensified, bullets whizzing past. It was clear that the AASOC wasn't holding back. It seemed every squad was being thrown into the mix.
Captain Ajwad, utilizing his military background, started orchestrating a defensive strategy, "Lay down suppressive fire. We need to buy them time!"
The insurgents and the MV Sirena crew, working seamlessly, began retaliating. Hamzah directed the firing patterns, ensuring maximum efficiency and conserving ammunition.
Liv, finding herself amidst the chaos, began to relay the possible tactical moves the AASOC might employ, aiding the defensive strategy. Hffyl, despite his resentment, acknowledged her inputs with curt nods.
Soon, Kadir's voice cut through, "Got a small window, their comms are jammed."
Karim and Asif, with the explosive ready, looked towards Captain Ajwad. He gave a nod, signaling for the explosive to be set.
Setting up the device near the vehicle's predicted path, they retreated, awaiting the precise moment to detonate.
As the armored vehicle rumbled closer, Zul yelled, "Now!"
A blinding explosion illuminated the battleground, shaking the very earth beneath them. The armored vehicle lay in ruins.
