Kai, Gon, Killua, Leorio and Kurapika said goodbye to the Heavens Arena, where they had stayed for two months and learned the basics of nen. They boarded a train for Yorknew City, where a colossal auction was about to take place.
They hoped to find some rare and priceless items, such as the Greed Island game, a mythical video game that uses nen and transports the players to a magical world full of monsters, treasures, and quests. They had heard rumors and stories about the game, and they were curious and excited to try it.
They then learned from a newspaper that a feared group of thieves and murderers, known as the Phantom Troupe, was scheming to steal a large collection of valuable items from a mafia auction, which was actually the same auction that they were planning to attend. The items included jewels, antiques, artworks, and relics. They were shocked and alarmed by the news, and they wondered what they should do.
"Did you see this?" Killua asked, showing them the newspaper headline. "The Phantom Troupe is planning to rob the auction!"
"What? The Phantom Troupe?" Gon exclaimed, looking at the paper. "Who are they?"
"They are a group of notorious thieves and killers, who are wanted by the authorities and the underworld. They are responsible for many crimes and atrocities, such as massacring an entire clan for their eyes." Kurapika explained, his voice tense and bitter.
"Massacring a clan for their eyes?" Kai repeated, feeling a surge of anger and sympathy. "That's horrible!"
"Yes, it is." Kurapika agreed, his eyes flashing red. "And I'm going to make them pay for it."
Kai and Killua decide to join Kurapika in his quest to find and defeat the Phantom Troupe, a group of heartless thieves who massacred his clan for their scarlet eyes, which turn crimson when they are angry or emotional, and are considered a rare and valuable treasure. They felt a bond with Kurapika.
"Kurapika, we're with you." Kai said, putting his hand on Kurapika's shoulder. "We want to help you get your revenge."
"Yeah, we're your friends." Killua added, smiling. "We'll stick with you until the end."
"Thank you, Kai. Thank you, Killua." Kurapika said, smiling back. "I appreciate your support. But are you sure you want to do this? It's very dangerous. The Phantom Troupe is not a joke. They are powerful and ruthless. They won't hesitate to kill anyone who gets in their way."
"We know that." Kai said, nodding. "But we're not afraid. We've faced danger before. We can handle it."
"Then let's go." Kurapika said, standing up. "Let's go and find the Phantom Troupe."
They sneak into the auction site, where the Phantom Troupe is planning to steal the items, and try to stop them, but they are outnumbered by their numbers and power. They encounter various members of the Phantom Troupe, each with their own unique and deadly nen abilities, such as Machi, who can manipulate threads, Nobunaga, who can wield a sword with great speed and precision, and Shalnark, who can control people with his phone and antenna.
They witness Kurapika's showdown with Uvogin, one of the strongest members of the Phantom Troupe, who has immense physical strength and can create powerful shockwaves with his voice. He is a brute force fighter who relies on his raw power and endurance. He reveals that he was the one who killed Kurapika's family, and mocks him for his weakness and hatred. He also tells him that he doesn't even remember their faces or names, as they were nothing more than trash to him.
"Kurapika, you're wasting your time." Uvogin said, laughing. "You can't beat me. You're too weak. You're too emotional. You're too pathetic."
"Shut up!" Kurapika shouted, his eyes glowing red. "You don't know anything! You don't know how I feel! You don't know what you've done!"
"Oh, I know what I've done." Uvogin said, grinning. "I've killed your clan. I've killed your family. I've killed your friends. I've killed them all. And you know what? It was fun. It was easy. It was satisfying."
"You monster!" Kurapika yelled, his voice cracking. "How can you say that? How can you be so cruel? How can you be so heartless?"
"Heartless? Me?" Uvogin said, shrugging. "I'm not heartless. I'm just honest. I don't care about anyone or anything, except myself and my comrades. Everyone else is just prey or obstacle. Everyone else is just trash."
"You bastard!" Kurapika screamed, his rage reaching its peak. "You'll pay for what you've done! You'll pay for what you've said! I'll make you pay!"
"Bring it on." Uvogin said, smirking. "Let's see what you've got."
They watch in awe as Kurapika reveals his hidden ability, Chain Jail, which allows him to capture and restrain any member of the Phantom Troupe with his chains. His chains are made of nen, and have different functions and conditions. He has five chains, one for each finger of his right hand.
One of them is a conjured chain that wraps around the target's heart, and prevents them from using nen or lying. It is called Judgment Chain, and it is attached to Kurapika's thumb. If the target breaks the rules, their heart will be crushed. Kurapika can only use this chain on members of the Phantom Troupe, or he will die. This is because he has made a vow and a restriction, which are ways to increase one's nen power by imposing limitations and risks on oneself.
He uses this chain on Uvogin, and forces him to answer his questions. He asks him about the location and identity of the other members of the Phantom Troupe, and about the whereabouts of his clan's eyes. He threatens to kill him if he lies or refuses to answer.
"Listen carefully, Uvogin. You are now under the effect of my Judgment Chain. If you lie or use nen, your heart will be crushed. Do you understand?" Kurapika said as he begins his interrogation.
"Grrr... Damn you... You think you can scare me with your tricks?" Uvogin said angrily.
"This is not a trick. This is a fact. You have no choice but to answer my questions. Or do you want to die?" Kurapika answered.
"Hmph. Fine. Ask away. I have nothing to hide." Uvogin said.
"Good. First question. How many members are there in the Phantom Troupe?" Kurapika asks the first question.
"Thirteen." he answered.
"Second question. What are their names and numbers?" Kurapika asks his second question.
"Why should I tell you that? You don't need to know." Uvogin answers
"Wrong answer. Tell me, or die." Kurapika threatens him.
"Argh... Fine. I'll tell you. But only because I don't care about them. They are not my friends. They are just my comrades." said Uvogin.
Kurapika signals him to begin talking.
"The leader is Chrollo Lucilfer. He is number 0 or 4, depending on how he arranges his tattoo. He is a specialist, and he can steal other people's nen abilities.
The second in command is Feitan Portor. He is number 2, and he is a transmuter. He can create heat and fire with his aura.
The third is Machi Komacine. She is number 3, and she is a transmuter too. She can create threads from her aura that can sew wounds, manipulate objects, or track people.
The fourth is Shizuku Murasaki. She is number 8, and she is a conjurer. She can create a vacuum cleaner that can suck anything, except living things and nen.
The fifth is Franklin Bordeau. He is number 7, and he is an emitter. He can shoot bullets from his fingers.
The sixth is Shalnark. He is number 6, and he is a manipulator. He can control people with his phone and antenna.
The seventh is Nobunaga Hazama. He is number 1, and he is an enhancer, like me. He is skilled in swordsmanship and can extend his aura around his sword.
The eighth is Phinks Magcub. He is number 5, and he is an enhancer too. He can increase the power of his punches by winding up his arm.
The ninth is Bonolenov Ndongo. He is number 10, and he is a conjurer. He can create sound effects with his body, and use them to create various attacks.
The tenth is Kortopi Sharnalki. He is number 12, and he is a conjurer too. He can create copies of anything he touches with his hands.
The eleventh is Pakunoda Mizaistomu. She is number 9, and she is a specialist. She can read the memories of people she touches with her fingers, or transmit them to others with her bullets.
The twelfth is Hisoka Morow. He is number 4, and he is a transmuter as well. He can change his aura into a sticky substance called Bungee Gum, or a sharp substance called Texture Surprise." Uvogin explains each member briefly of their phantom troupe.
"Lastly, me. my number is 11" said Uvogin.
"I see... Thank you for your cooperation, Uvogin." said Kurapika.
"Don't thank me yet. You still have one more question to ask me, don't you?" he asks.
"Yes... I do... Where are my clan's eyes? Where did you sell them? Who has them now?" Kurapika said his most important question to him.
"Oh... That... Well... I'm sorry to disappoint you. But I don't know the answer to that question." Uvogin said.
"What? You don't know?" he disbelieving asks.
"No, I don't. And neither do the other members of the Phantom Troupe. We don't care about the eyes. We only care about the money. We sold them to the highest bidder, and we never looked back." he explains.
"You... You sold them? Just like that? Without even knowing who they were?" Kurapika shockingly asks.
"Yes, we did. Why? Is that a problem?" as he said non-chalantly.
"A problem? A problem?! Of course it's a problem! Those eyes are not just objects! They are not just treasures! They are the souls of my people! They are the legacy of my clan! They are the proof of our existence!" shouts Kurapika.
"Oh, please. Spare me your sentimental nonsense. Your people are dead. Your clan is extinct. Your existence is meaningless. Those eyes are nothing but trash. Trash that we turned into cash." Uvogin insulting said.
"How dare you... How dare you say that... How dare you insult my clan... How dare you mock their memory..." said Kurapika as his eyes turn red when he begins to anger.
"What are you going to do about it, Kurapika? Are you going to cry? Are you going to scream? Are you going to kill me?" Uvogin said mockingly.
"Yes... Yes, I am... I'm going to kill you, Uvogin... I'm going to kill you right here, right now..." Kurapika threatengly said.
"Go ahead, then. Try it. See if you can. See if you have what it takes." he said as he encourages Kurapika.
"I do... I do have what it takes... I have the power... I have the will... I have the hatred..." Kurapika angrily said.
"Then bring it on, Kurapika. Show me your hatred. Show me your power. Show me your death." said Uvogin as he continues to encourage Kurapika.
They help Kurapika escape from the scene with Uvogin as his prisoner, hoping to use him as a bargaining chip or a source of information. They carry him to a car and drive away, avoiding the attention of the police and the mafia.
They know that the Phantom Troupe will not give up on their comrade, and that they will face more danger and conflict. They also wonder about Kurapika's nen ability, and how he was able to change his nen type from conjurer to specialist. They ask him about it, but he refuses to answer, saying that it is his secret and his weapon. He tells them that he will explain everything later, after he finishes his mission.
He tells them that they should be careful, as the Phantom Troupe will come after them soon. He tells them that they should be ready for anything, as the Phantom Troupe is unpredictable and ruthless. He tells them that they should be prepared for the worst, as the Phantom Troupe is powerful and dangerous.
"Kurapika, are you okay? You look pale." Kai worriedly asks
"I'm fine, Kai. Don't worry about me." Kurapika reassures him.
"How did you do that, Kurapika? How did you change your nen type from conjurer to specialist?" Killua curiously asks.
"I can't tell you, Killua. It's my secret and my weapon." Kurapika replies to him
"But Kurapika, we're your friends. We want to help you." said Gon.
"I appreciate that, Gon. But this is something I have to do on my own." said Kurapika
"Come on, Kurapika. Don't be so stubborn. We're in this together." said Leorio.
"No, Leorio. You're not. This is my fight. My revenge. My destiny." firmly replied.
"Kurapika, please. Don't shut us out. We care about you." concernly said Kai.
"I know, Kai. And I care about you too. But this is something I have to do on my own." Kurapika replies.
"Fine. Be that way. But don't expect us to sit back and watch." Killua said calmly.
"Yeah. We're not going to let you face the Phantom Troupe alone." said Gon.
"That's right. We're your team. Your allies. Your friends." said Leorio.
"... Thank you, guys. But please, be careful. The Phantom Troupe will not give up on Uvogin. They will come after us soon." Kurapika heartedly replies.
"We know that, Kurapika. And we're ready for them." said Kai.
"Yeah. We're not afraid of them." said Killua.
"Yeah. We can handle them." said Gon
"Yeah. We can beat them." said Leorio.
"... I hope so, guys. I hope so. But don't underestimate them. They are unpredictable and ruthless." Kurapika warningly said to them.
"We know that, Kurapika. And we're cautious of them." Kai reassuringly said.
"Yeah. We're not stupid." Killua replies.
"Yeah. We're not reckless." said Gon.
"Yeah. We're not naive." said Leorio.
"... Good, guys. Good. But don't overestimate yourselves either. They are powerful and dangerous." said Kurapika.
"We know that, Kurapika. And we're prepared for them." said Kai.
"Yeah. We're not weak." said Killua.
"Yeah. We're not helpless." said Gon.
"Yeah. We're not hopeless." said Leorio.
"... Alright, guys. Alright. But be prepared for the worst. They are the Phantom Troupe." said Kurapika.
