Chapter 35 - Awkward Ascendancy

Time seemed to slow, and the world around them dimmed.

Only the two figures, Crystal and Brandon, remained luminous amidst the encroaching darkness.

Crystal's ethereal armor cast a gentle, golden light, as if dawn itself had chosen to dance around her.

It pulsed, radiant and pure, reminiscent of the first rays of dawn breaking the night's veil.

Each pulse sent out waves of benevolent energy, a stark contrast to the atmosphere moments ago.

Opposite her, Brandon's ethereal armor emanated an abyss black aura.

It was as if the void itself clung to him, dark tendrils of power reaching out, yearning to snuff out the brilliance in front of them.

The stark black of his armor seemed to drink in the light around, creating an aura of impenetrable darkness.

Yet, as opposite as they were, the two auras didn't clash violently.

Instead, they danced around each other, creating an ephemeral twilight where they met, a testament to the deep connection shared by their wearers.

Crystal's face, usually composed and radiating confidence, betrayed her.

Her cerulean eyes, wide with shock, reflected the chaos of emotions roiling within.

They darted, not in defiance, but in fear - fear of the repercussions their encounter would bring upon the Capital City forces.

The weight of responsibility, the lives depending on her, made her feel vulnerable under Brandon's piercing gaze.

There was also a flicker of insecurity.

Their intimate night lay heavy between them.

Did it mean anything to him?

Her lips, once bold and teasing, now trembled ever so slightly, and her breath hitched, revealing her inner turmoil.

Brandon continued to scrutinize her, his dark eyes intense and probing.

But beneath that hard gaze lay a myriad of questions, ones that Crystal wasn't sure she was ready to answer.

The weight of Brandon's gaze was almost too much to bear.

Within the depths of Crystal's mind, a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions surged.

'Our connection... It wasn't just physical. There was something more, something deeper. But does he feel it too? Or am I just another face in the crowd to him?'

Thoughts of their children, Jade and Baron, tugged at her heartstrings.

'Would they even matter to him? Would he care? Would he want them? Or would he see them as mere consequences of a reckless night?'

Before she could spiral further, Brandon's deep voice sliced through her musings,

"Where are they?"

Summoning her courage, Crystal locked eyes with Brandon, revealing a mingling of hope and fear.

"They're safe with my younger sister, Ruby… She can bring them here if that's what you want."

His reply came in a detached, almost emotionless tone,

"Do it…"

As Brandon released her chin, turning his back to her, she could sense a distance greater than the physical space between them.

With shaky fingers, Crystal reached out to Ruby.

Meanwhile, Brandon ambled towards Devon, a swarm of conflicting emotions battling within him. But first, the task at hand.

He reached inward, seeking the voice he hadn't expected to converse with.

'Kitty! Heart of Civilization, can you hear me?'

There was a brief pause, then a melodic, almost whimsical purr resonated in his mind,

'Meow~ Yes~'

Brandon hesitated half a step, surprised that the Heart of Civilization responded and more importantly…

It could now… talk?

'I have two Hearts of Civilizations here… How do I extract them from the previous owners?'

The same enchanting tone, now laced with urgency, responded,

'Meow? Fast! I… Come…Eat… Meow~'

A ripple of amusement tinged Brandon's expression as he absorbed Kitty's response.

With a predatory gleam in his eyes, he cast a significant look at Baph and glanced toward the soldier Sir Adam had pointed to having laid claim to the Heart of Civilization of the neighboring Stellar City.

"Poki !"

He called out, stepping on and over Devon once again as if he were merely an insignificant obstacle.

The startled shout had Poki blinking back to reality from her stupefied daze.

Frantically she responded, hastily gathering her trademark selfie stick and sprinting towards him.

"Yes Boss!!!"

With wide eyes and a renewed sense of purpose, she scrambled through the crowd, dodging soldiers and avoiding the remnants of the recently disrupted setting.

Her breath came out in short puffs, her heels clacking against the ground in frantic haste.

Her iconic selfie stick bobbed along, capturing every angle of her journey towards Brandon.

Brandon, meanwhile, settled his foot with dominance onto Devon's chest, clearly establishing his position of power.

The sheer weight of his presence was palpable, causing even the most hardened of soldiers to shrink back.

Baph acted in tandem, grabbing the Stellar City Heart's owner by the collar and, with a swift move, forced him down on his knees beside Devon.

The poor man's face was a mix of fear and shock, his pride clearly wounded.

Using his foot as a makeshift tripod for balance, Brandon tilted his chin up, his gaze cold and piercing, while his other hand signaled Poki to ensure her camera was focused on him.

Poki, though panting slightly from her mad dash, was quick to reposition her selfie stick, framing Brandon perfectly with the two disgraced men at his feet.

"Greetings, I am King Void and from this day forth, the Capital City and Stellar City belongs to the Void Empire!"

The sun hung high, casting a gentle light upon the city square where Brandon, or King Void stood tall with his arm raised.

The weight of his proclamation still lingered in the air, and every face was turned toward him in anxious anticipation.

The silence was so thick, it was as though the entire city held its breath, waiting for a dramatic display of power.

But there was... nothing.

A mutated bird shrieked somewhere in the distance, its song eerily clear in the suffocating silence.

A gust of wind rustled the banners, the emblems of the Capital City momentarily fluttering in defiance.

The eerie quiet was broken only by the distant growls of mutated beasts and the faint rustling of trees.

The soldiers shuffled uncomfortably, glancing at each other with uncertainty. Whispers began to spread, and nervous laughter threatened to break the tension.

Had something gone wrong?

Brandon, realizing the awkwardness of the situation, shifted his weight from one foot to another. With a growing sense of unease, he delved inward and cried out mentally,

"Kitty! NOW!"
